New Orleans city employees are facing mandatory furloughs or pay cuts as City Hall continues efforts to close a massive budget shortfall inherited by Mayor Helena Moreno’s administration.
According to a memo distributed to city employees, most workers will be required to take unpaid time off or accept reduced pay beginning Feb. 15. The measures are expected to continue through the end of 2026, unless city finances improve sooner.
Classified employees and hourly unclassified workers must take the equivalent of 22 unpaid furlough days during the year, spread out to about one unpaid day each pay period. Unclassified salaried employees will not take furlough days but will see a 10% pay reduction during the same period.

The move is the latest step in addressing a projected $222 million budget gap that Moreno first outlined before taking office. In November, the mayor announced job cuts, a hiring freeze and furloughs as part of a broader plan to stabilize city finances.
Since then, the incoming administration has eliminated departments, laid off unclassified employees and reorganized City Hall operations in an effort to reduce costs while protecting public safety and critical services.

It’s been children leading children for so long now. I’m not sure anything can save New Orleans.

Ok. Moreno is ripping off bandaids. Good sign.

Since they are unpaid days off, I hope they call them "Teedy Days" to reinforce how fricking bad she was and how voting for someone like that is going to hurt them again.

And shockingly, there will be no reduction in work output.

I know a couple of city of New Orleans employees and I (seriously) don’t know how that department will handle any cuts or employees missing days. Had lunch with them several months ago and they were begging me to come over there. Teedy really messed that city up.

Those guys hate her. Honestly I think 1 or 2 will quit. They were running thin before this decision. They may be safe, I’m not certain what their classification is so they may not have to take any cuts.

Should be criminal to leave office with any kind of deficit let alone over 200 million for a small city like NOLA.

If I were the new mayor I’d focus solely on solving the sewerage and water board problems. Imagine the incompetence and grift in that dept.

New Orleans could be so ridiculously wealthy and it’s all been thrown away.

Absolutely no doubt every single person being furloughed or laid off voted for “Teedy” all 3 times… elections have consequences !
