Heavy snow in Austria has caused many avalanches and buried those who were skiing down hill below and then in them.

The Austrian Alpine Club was especially hard hit

quote:

an avalanche struck the 7,050ft-high Finsterkopf mountain in the Gastein Valley, south of the city of Salzburg.

It tragically swept away seven people. Four were killed, two seriously injured, and one escaped unharmed.

The four deceased included three men aged 53, 63, and 65, and a woman aged 60.

It has since been revealed that the group was part of a course organised by the Austrian Alpine Club. The course was part of a regular winter training program, the group stated.

Ignorant comment. Alpine skiing is crazy hard to do well. Technique and strength has to be off the charts in order to compete at the highest levels. Nordic (cross country) skiers have the highest measured vo2 max of any endurance athlete. Even cyclists.

Av safety is no joking matter. Crazy shite happens some times, granted, but this is avoidable.

Skiing people are annoying AF. I just want to watch football, not spend $30,000 a year to hang out with douchebags and risk my knees.

Their elevated VO2 max values are due to the nature of XC skiing being full body as opposed to legs only with cycling. Regardless elite level XC skiers are incredibly fit individuals

Shut up

I spend way less than 30k a year. Usually 1k for the Ikon pass and like 3k on hotels and Air B&Bs. Probably less this year because snow conditions are arse

Have you been skiing yet? You must have missed my post on the last skiing thread where I pointed out the high-trust community within skiing, there is tens of thousands of dollars of equipment just laying around with not a care in the world about theft.

Hasn’t been this way since we have young kids, but my wife and I used to take a ski trip every year. We spent a fraction of $30k (not sure where you pulled that figure) and neither of us has ever gotten hurt. Skiing is fun

I went skiing for the first time 3 years ago. Just assumed it was easy and being a relatively decent athlete I would have no problem with it.

Walked off that mountain beat to shite

Still can’t wait to do it again.

What will really blow your mind is when you start to learn how to do them yourself. Look at their chests. Pointed straight down their line. All the movement is below the waist. Now, the guys you see on tv have been doing that shite from jump. "noobs" like me that started in their 20's? Lol. I'll never be able to do that. I can get through them and blah blah but I'm usually dying after the really steep stuff. Those guys? Barely breaking a sweat.
