Gus Malzahn has announced his retirement from coaching.

LINK

quote:

"After 35 years, it's time for me to step away from coaching," Malzahn said. "I am excited to spend more time with my family and focus on the next chapter of my life. I want to thank Coach Norvell for giving me the opportunity to coach at such a prestigious program. I will continue to follow Florida State, and I believe great things are ahead for the program under Coach Norvell's leadership and for the offense under Tim Harris."

Congrats to him and what ever he does next. He gave us some great moments at Auburn

Good for Gus. Great career. Lighting in a bottle in 2010 and 2013 but you cannot deny that he changed offense in college football. Great legacy IMO.

Also good for him retiring at 60.

He will be remembered most for being innovative at exploiting defensive substitutions with tempo and formations to trap defenses in bad personnel, to the point that coaches pushed for rule changes.

Health? Hookers? Drugs? Not really retiring, but was either forced out or really wanted out of Tallahassee? I always liked Gus. It’s a shame he never got to be the Arkansas HC.

Wasnt there a story here?

Was it timing or did Arkansas think they were too good to hire the ASU/high school coach

ETA he would have been available in 2013 when arky hired bielema

Bielema is one hell of a football coach. Look at what he’s doing at Illinois right now.

Not sure. I always just assumed it was timing like you mentioned. Maybe there was something more to it.

And I didn’t really mean “hookers,” but more-so a potential affair. There’s usually more to these early retirements when coaches cite “wanting to spend more time with their families.” God bless him if that’s truly the case. And sure he’s made a ton of money in his career, but he’s a young 60, and it’s hard for anybody to walk away from a million $ + gig. I just hope it’s not health related.

One of the more meme-able SEC coaches in recent years.

I understand what you meant.

Maybe I’m alone in this and maybe naive but Gus always seemed like one of the more genuine guys of the crew that tried to small town Baptist preach God family and football.

Freeze always seemed swarmy
Dabo holier than thou

But Gus seemed more legit.

History probably won't remember him as well as it should. Unless something changes on the plains a generation of Auburn fans will remember him as "the" guy.

I agree. Always thought he was a great coach and leader. Did it the right way in my view.

Nobody gave Saban more trouble sans brief stints from Miles and Freeze

Gus and Sexton played Arkansas in the Chad Morris cycle just for a raise at Aub.

There was legit interest there from some BOT and $$ AT Ark, but the fanbase was already split on him after the 2006 debacle. It would have been a toxic hire.

After that, though, he was dead to almost everyone in the program.

Played golf with he and Lashlee before the beginning of last years season and he was saying it was time for him to hang it up then.

interesting fact... he was Lashlee's O coordinator and golf coach in High School.

Does Malzahn rank above Tubs for Auburn fans? I believe one SEC title each, and of course Tub's "recent" 04 title.

Malzahn was a great coach. Like most plenty of times I was frustrated with certain calls. But it ultimately sucked he was across the state from Saban or his career is likely vastly different

ETA: Malzahn was one of the ultimate “don’t fire him unless you can guarantee someone better”

And the dumbasses making the decisions…well we know how it turned out
