In the past year or so, three of the internet groups I've been a long time member of have shut down or planning on shutting down.

One was a boxing forum and the other was a long time motorcycle forum that had been a member of since 1999 are no longer available and the third, a darts forum is shutting down at the end of March.

Anyone else noticing this trend or am I just that lucky? Seems like many of these specialized interest groups are going the Facebook route.

Forums is where all the car fixing trouble shooting info is. Youtube shows you how to change the part but not necessarily the trouble shoot process. Sometimes you just need the words of someone that has been there before. Like for a motor swap or what ever.

Just follow them to facebook. You don’t have to use the forum for anything else.

Hell no. TD has a lot of traffic daily, so I see no reason for it to go in another direction.

The boxing forum and the darting forum cited a big drop in active membership as their reason, along with the amount of time the admins have to dedicate to keeping things running smoothly.

People get older, other things happen in their lives that make it harder to maintain sites, etc.

Basically, life goes on.

I think the OT would benefit tremendously with the addition of a Boxing Board

Message boards are dying outside of Reddit.

Even TD is getting older.

Gen z doesn’t even comprehend a computer file system. Colleges are now requiring basic PC classes because Gen Z doesn’t know how to use them. So you can forget things like listservs or web forums.

Online forums are so 2009.

I used to belong to one back in the day for years and it ended shutting down around 2013. Moderator kept on asking for donations in order to pay for the host web services. Nobody paid lol, ended shutting down.

Facebook has practically a group for everything, and that is why forums are either dead or dying.

Yea - i have seen forums and interest-based websites close..

Sometimes, it is the cost of servers if they were popular, or the owners/admins got tired of trying to keep things going, or the photos being stolen from the website without acknowledgements. Some get bought and then dropped.

I know one of at least one Jeep related forum that had lots of good tech data and info that is gone. I used to print out the discussions/photos for reference.

ANother Class 8 truck related site had tons of photos and interesting discussions of old trucks, trucking in 50s-70s and it too is gone.

And as we have seen here, posters/participants age and die as well.

Digital version of community groups in some ways...
