Don't need anything fancy. Just the wife and me left in the house and we are moving in about 5 years.

Depends on a lot of things, but I'd budget a grand in addition to the cost of the unit.
All in for a pretty standard unit, I'd expect to spend $2,000.

We just put in one that had Wi-Fi from Home Depot and it was just over $700. Rheem 40 gal. I’ve since discovered the 230 V smart switches on Amazon that I would’ve just got a dumb one. I wanted the ability to remote shutdown

Basic gas water heater is like $600.
cheapest case for a legit plumber to install will be $250. worst case could be $2000 install
I'd expect $500 if not in an attic. so 1100 all in

You’re looking at $1250-1500 for the install in the city. Minus unit or extra work. Might get a one man show to do it for cheaper.

2k for attic install (unit included) is pretty standard.
Be prepared for the plumber to be in and out in less than 3 hours. It took me longer to drain the old one than to get it disconnected and out the attic.
Pro tip: if you diy, buy one of the stainless steel connector kits from HD. Connect one of the connector hoses direct from hot to cold and use it as a handle to pull it up the attic stair.
Game changer when you swap one out by yourself

Dealing with removing the old one (full of calcium buildup) was more work than installing a new one. Old school install is pretty straightforward. Plumber wanted $800 and only one step and one door to navigate. This was 10 years ago. No thanks. Did it myself in an hour or so.

I got a quote from my HVAC guy the last time he was in the attic, and he came back with $4,500….i didn’t even answer him!

I just paid $1800 a couple months ago for an attic install and haul away of my old one.

This is a basement heater. Got one estimate last week for $2650, so that seems pretty high. Getting another estimate today.

Mine went out 3 days before Christmas, while my house was for sale.
All the way across the attic, in and out through a small door in a knee wall in the 2nd story.
I bought a cheap unit for $500, plumber got me for $1600 install plus new metal pan.
Buddy had me by balls.
ETA: Then on his way out..."Man look at this big arse buck on my camera, Im about to head out and hit the woods!" I said shite dude you can take the rest of the week off with what I just paid you.

That was so he could pay his plumber buddy $2k and still keep $2500 for himself

Go to Lowe's or HD and have them do it. Plus get a 50 gal bc you can never have too much hot water when you have visitors.

All they do is have preferred vendors, they take a cut and pay some crappy plumber that agreed to work for them to do the job.
Attic is probably going to be $2000+ OP. Its ridiculous and plumbers have gone to do it mostly be the piecework as said.

I've had both do jobs for me in the past and was always good work and they dispose of the old water heater.
Forgot to add; get the extended warranty. I ended up with an 11 year warranty on my water heater.

That's why my old one is still in the attic 3 years later. Plenty of room in my attic, so I just left it there.
I did DIY with Sharkbite fittings (all fittings are over the pan if it leaks). It was a very, very easy job.
