This shows a significant problem with the NC GOP bylaws. Someone like this would never be allowed to run as a republican in Alabama just because nobody else opposed them.

There is likely another Dem who wins
So, why not try and run on R ticket since it was unopposed.
Win and then you get 6-7 months of free money and pimping donors even though you will lose. This was probably planned by the Dem party.
Get your name out there so whenever D incumbent steps down at term limits you can run for that seat and have name recognition
State parties might have a set amount of minimum money each candidate gets, not sure about NC
