Something off about this. Almost like they’re scared to not make a splash hire.

Billy Donovan can flat out coach the X’s and O’s. Still very well thought of in NBA circles. Only question is can he navigate recruiting in the NIL world/landscape and does he even have the desire for that anymore

Not talking about Donovan but he hasn’t coached college kids in a very long time.

Billy Donovan to UNC would be good for the sport.

UNC will dump tons of money into NIL basketball. Shouldn't be a concern.

What's been stopping them?

I think they invested, likely on the wrong guys working as a group

Donovan at a blue blood should work.
UNC will pour NIL money into its men’s basketball program.
They’re probably tired of watching Duke get every big time recruit they want.

He’d be smart to take it.
To no fault of his own the bulls aren’t going anywhere anytime soon so he’s basically a dead man walking there

Can’t believe it’s been 10 years time sure does fly

quote:Thing is there isn’t really a college game anymore. “College” is a professional league with younger players. His day job for the last 10 years is way closer to the modern college game than the version he left
Been out of the college game for 10 years
Despite consistently mediocre rosters he’s managed to build and keep strong cultures at both OKC and CHI. The list of modern NBA coaches who make it 10+ years that are still respected by players with personalities more in line with toddlers than functioning adults is short. He’s a good coach and he’s arguably as experienced as anyone who’s remained in the college game over the last 10 years at managing the modern professional athlete
One of his few weaknesses in college (recruiting at an elite level every year) isn’t even a thing in the NIL era at a program like UNC. It completely disappears. Nor do his schemes require perfect roster building, though he’d get damn near every guard/wing he wanted. He’d have everything he’d need to contend for championships
I’m sure year 1 wouldn’t be perfect but I think it’s easier to argue he’s more built for this era than the one he left. And the one he left entailed making the Elite Eight in 4 of his last 5 years

I think he'll do fine in college but he's only stuck around so long in the NBA because Bulls ownership doesn't give a shite.

The story of his Chicago tenure has been taking junk and keeping them way closer to .500 than they have business being

Funny enough Duke lost their top target this year.

The school will have someone deal with that and recruiting. He likely will only help land the big time players....and even in that case it's more about the money.

I wouldn't be mad with it.
I don't believe the lights would come on so quickly over night... but I do believe he would set himself well for longer success which I'm all for.
