I recently purchased some property that has a secondary gravel driveway. It's a large area and I need to get ahead of the weeds growing. I've only ever used Roundup. Is there a better herbicide that I can use with a backpack sprayer? Thank you in advance.

Would a pre-emergent not work?

1 Gallon White Vinegar (20% or higher, or regular household vinegar).
1 Cup Salt (canning or rock salt).
1 Tablespoon Dish Soap (helps the mixture stick to leaves).

Application: Spray thoroughly on a hot, sunny day

Warning - the salt is permanent. Nothing will ever grow there again without replacing the dirt.

Get RM43 from Tractor Supply. Weeds and grass does not come back for a good 6-8 months.

Permanent for a few months until the rain dissipates it?

If it were permanent so many ditches and fence rows would be dirt.

Nah, the plants won't grow in a salt environment.

quote:

over time the salt will accumulate and can render the soil useless for growing anything but salt-tolerant weeds, of which there are plenty. But lawn grass, flowers, fruits, vegetables, trees, nope. All will mysteriously refuse to grow in decades to come, until someone finally does a soil test for salinity, and goes, "Oh. No wonder." And then there isn't much they can do besides wait even longer for time and rainfall to move the salt lower down the soil column.

Have you ever heard the term "salt the earth"?

quote:

"Salting the earth" is a historical and largely symbolic scorched-earth tactic involving spreading salt on conquered land to render it infertile and unusable by the enemy.

I understand with enough concentration there would be "salted earth" but this dude isn't putting down enough salt on his driveway to make that happen and you know it. If he did then he'd have a huge problem when it rained and leached off of the driveway and killed his nearby trees and grass.

Roundup use to be glyphosate before class action lawyers “convinced” them to change the formula to something that doesn’t work as well as glyphosate. Generic glyphosate still works great with a surfactant. Just wear gloves when you mix it and don’t spray it in your mouth.
