John Puri criticized the cease fire. Will this turn into our equivalent of the Suez Crisis?

quote:

I can think of one important way that Iran is better off — and the United States and the rest of the world far worse off — than before the war began. As of now, the regime controls the Strait of Hormuz in every meaningful sense. Iran decides which ships get through, if any. Iran determines whether one-fifth of the regular global fuel trade is cut off, at will. Iran can extort a toll from any ship that wishes to escape the Persian Gulf, so long as it fulfills the regime’s terms.

President Trump announced a cease-fire on Tuesday, declaring that U.S. forces would cease striking Iran in exchange for the mullahs opening the Strait of Hormuz. In doing so, he conceded what everyone knows: Iran, and Iran alone, controls whether the strait is open or closed. We know this because, despite Trump’s cease-fire, the Strait of Hormuz remains very much closed.

What can the United States do to liberate the Strait of Hormuz from Iran’s grasp? Apparently nothing. U.S. forces have spent over a month trying to end Iran’s capacity to strike tankers, to no avail. Trump threatened to obliterate the country’s infrastructure unless the mullahs reopened the strait, and they did no such thing. He has tried diplomacy, pursued international coalitions, floated risky operations, and promised naval escorts. Nothing has worked. If the United States could open the strait by military force that we are willing to use, we would have done so already.

It is clear that American officials underestimated how cheaply and easily Iran could lock up the strait, even after its major offensive capabilities were disabled. The waterway is just 24 miles across at its narrowest point, and unconventional warfare has made safe passage virtually impossible. Small crewed boats can plant sea mines, while unmanned boats laced with explosives can ram directly into tankers. Inexpensive Shahed drones can eat up costly interceptors. The real killers are Iran’s anti-ship missiles, whose mobile batteries can moved frequently and placed anywhere along Iran’s 1,000-mile coastline....

A good idea would be to let them accumulate more and build nukes.

I made this point several days ago.

We have made the Ayatollah MORE influential internationally not less.

Before it was a theoretical blown off threat about shutting down the strait.

Now?

They proved they can do it and will do it.

NR likely trying to manipulate Trump into a ground invasion.

Of course the content of the article is right.

You can’t sell outrage if your readers rationally wait and see and then find out there’s nothing to be outraged about

We didn’t hit any of the Uranium deposits. And we “obliterated” their nuclear deposits last year didn’t we? So why start this war? It seems like all we did was prove we can’t stop Iran from controlling the spigot of energy to the rest of the world and that we don’t have the will to stick out a war.

Sure would be nice if we had allies to call on to help us out. Too bad we decided to alienate and start an economic war with them.

What?

4 months ago the threat of Iran striking you in the US was 0.0%

Today it is still 0.0% except you pay a lot more for gas.

I don't think the fact that now multiple options can shut down the strait makes things better

No.

What this actually shows is not that Iran is more powerful / influential…it’s that deterrence and enforcement have weakened. NATO has no balls.

The Strait of Hormuz carries roughly one-fifth of global oil trade. Any disruption of that scale through threats against civilian commercial shipping, restrictions on passage, or imposed transit fees directly undermines established principles of free navigation and global trade.

And the reality is this: if any other nation attempted to exert that level of control over a critical international shipping lane, the response would have been immediate and decisive.

The concern isn’t just Iran’s behavior, it’s the lack of consistent enforcement that allows this situation to persist and escalate in the first place.

Given their threats on the straight should be called out and shut down immediately by any means necessary.
