Another scrappy, very good second baseman, like Davey Lopes, that old-school fans will remember, and won a pennant as a manager.
Cancer sucks.

This one really sucks, he was a great guy. I was friends with his son growing up and every Wednesday night was poker night at the Garner house. We were high school kids who’d bring boxes of quarters and our best Swisher Sweets and act like adults for a few hours. He kept his replica World Series trophy from the Pirates on a random chair around the pool table.
One of my favorite memories was while visiting family in Baltimore my uncle got us tickets to the Brewers Orioles game and had no idea I knew Mr Garner. I went to the bathroom between innings and on my way back I walked down by the dugout and Phil was standing out front so I yelled to him and he told me to come back after the game and he’d get us down in the clubhouse.
So after the game we went to leave and I told my uncle we should go down to the clubhouse instead. I found Phil and he had a team official take us to a private elevator where Bob Ueker was waiting. We hopped on and went and hung out with all the Brewers players and the whole time my uncle was just wide eyed looking around like what the frick is going on.
Rip P Gar. A true legend.

Great story. Memories that will last you a lifetime.
I'm a born and bred Royals fan. However, I lived in Houston for several years, so went to many 'Stros games while Garner was manager.
He seemed like a great guy. RIP, "Scrap Iron".

Saw him hit a home run in the Astrodome when he played for the Astros. RIP

I’ll never forget that 2004 season when the Astros fired Jimmy Williams after going 44-44 and hired Garner to try and spark some life into the team. Astros ended up going 48-26 the rest of the way, they believed in themselves so much at that point, finally got over the Braves hump in the NLDS and it’s a shame they ran into Pujols
same story next year, they were in 6th through June and roared back to take the wild card, vanquished their demons between Braves and Cardinals but just couldn’t get over on the White Sox. That was such a fun time to be a fan

RIP Phil. The Pirates’ 1979 Family just lost a sibling.

‘79 Pirates were one of my favorite teams of all time … I can close my eyes and see Pops twirling that bat and then really putting a charge into one. He struck out a good bit but damn, Stargell had a quick bat.

I was at the series when the Astro's traded him to the Dodgers. We saw him on both teams that series.

My favorite Garner memory was when La Russa went out to home plate to argue with the Ump, which went on for some time. Manager Garner came out of the Brewers dugout as he made his way to the plate while holding and pointing to a stopwatch, which set La Russa off, and the two of THEM got into it. They hated each other.

His 1995 fight with White Sox manager Terry Bevington was the highlight of the post-Yount to pre-Prince Fielder/Rickie Weeks Brewers.
First Davey Lopes, now Phil Garner. Someone needs to check on Tom Treblehorn.

He fought pancreatic cancer for two years where most people succumb to it within a year.
He lived up to his nickname to the very end
RIP.

He only played for the Pirates for four years, but he was loved in that town. He was the classic glue-guy that his stats never really added up to what he meant to the team. R.I.P.
