Hiatal Hernia Repair - What is the recovery time?

I am having the following Hernia repair:
Procedures: XI ROBOTIC FUNDOPLICATION, NISSEN
EGD (ESOPHAGOGASTRODUODENOSCOPY)
Has anyone had a similar procedure and if so:
How much pain will this lead to?
How long before I can travel?
How long before I can climb stairs?
Are they anything else you might suggest to help get over this?

I had the inguinal hernia surgery like that. Wasn't bad at all. I was sore when I woke up, but it got better each day. The fourth day was when it really went down.
I climbed the stairs at home that night. They said at the hospital that walking and climbing stairs were good for healing. Obviously I couldn't walk as far I normally would.
They said not to lift over ten pounds or do strenuous activity for two weeks. Worst of it was not riding the bike to work. I started doing that while going easy after one week. Just kept a steady pace and got off and walked when uphill.
ETA: they pump your stomach with gas for the robotic surgery, and it seemed like the gas pains were the worst of the pain. Be sure to wear sweat pants. They told me to wear something comfortable and I wore the biggest loosest jeans I have, and couldn't get buttoned up to go home.

I've known people that had the procedure you're referring to. The first couple of days seemed like the worst (obviously.) The majority of pain/discomfort in that first period was related to the gas used to distend the belly.
After that it was mostly incisional pain you'd expect from having had surgery. You should feel mostly normal in a week and back to being your regular self in 2-3 weeks.

My wife had it a few years ago and I think the surgery was fine.
She was on a restrictive diet of liquids for about a week and no heavy meals for I think about a month from what I recall

I had to have a hiatal hernia repair with Linx in February.
The actual surgery was a non-issue. I was back home the same day. Never needed any pain killers. Was out walking 3-4 miles by 1 week after surgery.
Two months out now and I feel more or less normal. Able to lift, run, swim, play golf and not even think about it. Acid reflux has completely gone away. Have taken zero medication since the surgery.
The most challenging part by far was and is the dietary restrictions. I still get bad chest pain and hiccuping if I eat too fast or too big of a meal. That has been very slow to get better.

Had hernia mesh put in to heal my intestine. Surgery took about an hour with the incision on my right side where the leg meets torso. Got home and went straight to the couch. After a couple of hours, I needed to pee. Got up to go to the bathroom and damn near passed out for the pain. Was down for a couple of days but got better and was up and Adam in 3 days. 5 years later the mesh fell apart and had to go through the same thing but this time they went thru my stomach, instead of the first time they went a little lower. Not near the pain from the first surgery. Should have sued the mesh company but let my time to sue slip away. Didn't have to pay a dime for the second surgery.

I hate to say this. My brother had this procedure done. He never made it off the table.
My last conversation with him was about this surgery. I miss him every freaking day.

Touchy subject for me. Rare occurrence but it happened. Don't want sympathy and don't really want to discuss it further.
Again rare occurrence terribly sorry to mention this but I couldn't ignore it.

That's a totally different surgery than OP is talking about. his is for acid reflux.

I had this 5 years ago.
Pros: didn’t need nexium for about 3 years.
Cons: was sent home day after surgery and started dry heaving 3-4 days later (can’t vomit anymore after surgery). Terrible nausea, pain, weakness, etc. Messaged the Doctor and he said it was normal just do liquid diet longer. On day 7 I woke up to pee at 3am and collapsed after standing up. Every breath I took was the most excruciating pain I’d ever experienced (at the time). Wife called 911 and after ER doctors told me I was constipated, they did an CT and I had a massive abdominal hematoma. I’d bled out over 1 Liter of blood that incapacitated me when it reached my diaphragm…..they left the blood to “reabsorb” on its own and it abcessed a month later, but had migrated between my colon and bladder where it stayed for 6 months destroying my insides. I developed Crohn’s disease, Psoriatic Arthritis, AFIB, avascular necrosis in both hips (long term steroid treatment for blood inflammation) 1 hip replaced already, colon perforation that ended with an ileostomy bag for 3 months, 100’s of doctors visits, now live in constant pain and fatigue, and 22 surgeries following the initial fundoplication in 4.5 years. Oh, and I’m back on nexium because the fundo stopped working……MAKE SURE YOU RESEARCH YOUR SURGEON AND ASK EVERY QUESTION YOU CAN THINK. Good Luck!

I had a Nissen fundoplication 20 years ago. Mine was laproscopic .. tied my stomach around my esophagus to help with GERD and acid reflux,, also had small hernia
was couple weeks of dietary restrictions, followed by about 3 months of light duty… recovery wasn’t terrible
the bloating, chest pains from
Gas, and the farting were extreme and are only better 20 years later but still persistent. I couldn’t belch or even throw up for for first 12 years because nothing would come up..,
Surgery in my opinion was 100% worth it

I had the fundapplication surgery three years ago and it took 4 to 6 months to recover.

How long was iit before you could climb a flight of stairs?
My man cave is upstairs and it’s a female free zone that can be needed at a moments notice!!
