If I was absolutely forced to call at least one (for sake of argument)

It would have been the one against CS, but again, thats with being forced.

The first one was horrible. The second was away from us and UGA didn't run a replay. Statement in the stands was that #8 spiked the football. I didn't see that.

Regardless, there was general consensus in the stands that the intentional-grounding-safety noncall was equally bad and was payback for the earlier PF stupidity.

as bad as it looked, it was not intentional grounding

cox was slightly outside the box, got it past the LOS, and they had a fullback in the area

Not the feeling me or Mrs NC or of the roughly 100 UGA fans surrounding us. Looked to be IG.

Agreed, the intentional grounding looked horrible live but then looked like the right call in the replay

The spot was bad when LSU went for it on 4th down in the first half.

I was shocked that the call was not made, and I was even more shocked when the replay showed that he was out of the box. Good no-call.

D

There was not doubt that they would slap us with one after the stupid call against Georgia.

On the replay, I thought Green had thrown the ball into the stands. He had it in his left hand. A couple of teammates grabbed him, and the replay shows his left arm going in an upward motion. You can't see his hand until a second or two later, and he didn't have the ball in his hand any more. I didn't see him throw the ball into the stands, but that's the impression I got watching the replay.

I've called high school games for 10 years now and have one "Superdome" game under my belt. I call all 5 positions, but mostly I'm a backjudge for varsity games so I'm in the endzone for every score.

Officials are there to enforce the rules and make judgement calls and rule interpetations. Unfortunately, they do not get to choose which rules to enforce and which ones to ignore. I think on both plays, the covering officials were enforcing the rules at that level. The problem with endzone celebrations is that the 2 teams are in close proximity to each other... one team elated and one team dejected. This can be a recipe for trouble.

On scoring plays, especially big scores like both of those were, I am very proactive in talking to the players and getting them to their sidelines so that there are no penalties. On both plays we are talking about, I would have moved toward Green and Scott while instructing them to move toward the sideline to celebrate. I believe both of these penalties could have been avoided by any one of the 3 covering officials acting proactively.

All that being said, I think the SEC front office has instructed the officials to get a handle on endzone celebrations, and I think the officials in the LSU-UGA game took those instructions a little too far.

I suppose Scott was a little more deserved, but think that neither should have been called.

Seems both endzones celebrations lingered a bit long with both entire O's in the endzone for a little bit, I dont know that that matters but it seems that without throwing that flag you could end up with endless huge celebrations after big scores if you dont curb it.

However, yesterday in the final two minutes was not the time or place

I guess you make the call that you were trained to make wether the fans or announcers like it or not.

ETA: I would like to think that I would not make either of the excessive penalty calls but then again I am just an armchair QB with a lot of hindsight & not a trained ref (in other words, hate the rule not the refs enforcing it)
