He comes up with this gem.......How in the hell is this guy employed by a major newspaper? The guy is a one trick pony and pretty much a joke.

quote:

Most conversations about black people's relatively poor swimming skills begin and end with the assumption that it's all black people's fault. For example, there are swimming pools and beaches all around this area, so if black people don't swim as well - so the thinking goes - it must be because black people don't want to know.

The problem is that black people have a slightly higher bone density and have a higher percentage of more dense fast twitch muscle fibers.

Those two things make them less buoyant in water. Ever hear a beach lifeguard reference an "african rockfish"? It's because they, like rockfish, arent really all that buoyant.

it's also the reason they can generally run faster and jump higher.

He really is pretty pathetic. All he can write about over and over is some race baiting victim bullshite.
He is maybe qualified to be writing for a college paper at a place like Southern University.

Hmm, I've never heard this. Where do you get this from?

Maybe some of the better athletes but the obese black folks that are so prevalent these days as well?

confirmed in numerous peer reviewed studies.

the ratio of, even for the obese ones, fast twitch to medium and slow twitch is higher for blacks, regardless of body fat percentage.

But none of that means they can't swim.

Of course not. I suspect the reasons they never learn to swim(stereotypically) have little do with physiology.

But, that physiology goes a long way towards explaining why you just don't see many GREAT black swimmers.

they can, it;s just harder because their head floats much closer to the surface of the water...with some actually needing to actively swim to keep above water.

Most other races can simply float, head out of water.

Swimming, and speaking as a competitive swimmer all the way through college, has a LOT to do with buoyancy. All of the common strokes are more about propulsion, with only a small component used for buoyancy. In fact, people like myself who had heavy bones with a decent muscle mass had to learn modified strokes to provide more of the buoyancy component...even for racing.

Hmmm... I actually thought this wasn't that bad of a column, compared to the drivel he usually produces.

I think the root of the problem is access. NOLA does't have that many community pools, and, poor black people (of which this city has many) can't afford to have their own pool, live in a place with a pool, or join a country club with a pool. Not to mention the cost of paying someone to teach your kid how to swim (especially if the parent never learned).

But once again, Jarvis misses the point. It's not race... it's money. There are plenty of poor white kids who can't swim either.

When integration came in the 60s pools all over the south were closed down and filled in and have never re-opened.
