Fab may retire from USMNT after Russia (EDIT: Ehhh... maybe not)

Not sure this will change much going forward in this cycle considering every WCQ match from here on out is "important". I just hope this doesn't turn Bruce off of Fab completely, because we still need him.

I still think he's our best option at left back for Russia
If I had to trot out a lineup to win a game- it would look something like this

After reading the actual bild article, I'm not sure how much to read into this. Fab mentioned how he has an agreement with Bruce for important matches (which I'm sure many of the euro-based players have) and the reporter followed up with asking if the World Cup would be a good end to his career and Fab basically said "yeah, that'd be cool. Brazil was fun and I'm looking forward to Russia."
Didn't mention anything about international retirement. Starting to think this is a case of sensationalism based on loose translations.

Nagbe to the left, Fab to the right mid, Villafana to LB, Pulisic in the middle, Dempsey as a supersub.

He said they have an agreement, so I doubt it.

To each their own, I think that's our best 11. Slide Pulisic to the middle and bring on a wide midfielder when deuce is subbed off. He's still one of our top 3-4 players at scoring or creating goals and fabs is still a better left back than Villafaña. Deuce is basically playing a 10 or false 9 for the usmnt when he's in the game now anyway

Deuce playing as a false 9 behind two forwards leaves a huge open hole in the midfield since he's pretty much allergic to tracking back.

Yep. He doesn't fit well as an attacking mid. I like Nagbe there.
Deuce seems to play with more urgency as a super-sub, for obvious reasons. It's like he has a chip on his shoulder and wants to show "hey I should have been in here the whole game, see?" but when he is in there the whole game, his activeness often decreases.

If we're playing a formation with an attacking mid, the first and only choice is Pulisic.

I like him there too, and am indifferent to having either play the position.

The difference is that Pulisic has the killer instinct in the final third, Nagbe doesn't.

Deuce can't play in the midfield. He can play behind another forward but can't be the 3rd forward on the field. Nagbe Pulisic or someone like Costa has to be alongside Bradley centrally.

Agree about him playing best as support striker or #10 with freedom to play make and limited defensive duty but I don't recall him playing false 9 since being maybe shorthanded at the world cup after Altidor's injury?
Maybe I just missed it?
False 9 would have Dempsey leading the line in a 4-3-3 but without Altidor, Morris or any other striker playing in front of him.

Which is what happened in the Copa America.
It was a 4-3-3 with Wood and Zardes on either side of him.

Thanks, I did miss that match then.
I would certainly hope that particular front line doesn't happen in Russia.

Central midfield is a wasteland with that lineup.

I still don't know why miazga isn't getting some serious playing time

What does that have to do with anything discussed in this thread?

I don't know. I'm not starting a whole new thread just for that.

Uh... ok. Well the answer to your question is because Cameron, Brooks and Besler are all better right now than Miazga and Gonzalez and Ream probably are too.
