Womens sports in the US have been at a huge advantage over the rest of the world with Title 9, putting millions into womens athletic development which other countries really don't care about. Slowly though, the rest of the world is starting to put money into womens football as well.

Europe is making headway after starting to take the womens game more seriously after the turn of the century by starting a womens champions league. There are still countries that would be great, like Argentina, that only treat their athletes as amateurs/semi-pros which still keep places like the US on top with very few places willing to put in the time and effort to prop up womens soccer.

When do you think we can start to see a more competitive international womens game to the point where the US women need to play their A game just to make the semis?

Developed Europe is largely technically already at the point of equivalence. Say what you will about some of the USWNT players but if the overall side wasn't mentally tough as frick on the field they easily could have lost the France or England matches.

Developing World? Maybe never. Women's football is a luxury good economically + developing countries don't have anywhere near the social pressures driving the growth of the game in the lily-white current powers. My expected outcome for the next 3 decades is we usually end up with the same Top 8-10 sides (almost entirely US/Developed Europe/AUS) and we end up with a consistent Big 3 of USA/France/England. The club game in the latter two is getting massive.

The real shame is the lack of CAF/AFC/CONMEBOL/non-US CONCACAF talent. The group stages are just point differential battles for the top 2. The men's game sees non-UEFA/CONMEBOL sides routinely bringing it to the traditional powers. We'll never see anything close to 2014 Spain not getting past the group...certainly not 2018 Germany coming in last place.

The other major European countries are already playing a more exciting, and technical style of soccer. I was really impressed by Italy and Spain, and they basically just started supporting women’s soccer.

I think we will begin/continue to see traditional European soccer nations take over the sport. Especially with their club teams adding women’s teams.

Just look at the last 8 of the WC

all UEFA countries except the USWNT

That England match is the first time in a long time we have seen the US team pushed to that limit in that high level of a game. Porbably the best women's match ive ever seen from a technical and pace stand point.

Usually when the WNT gets knocked out of the WC or Olympics its bc their own frick ups.

England will be one to look for since their league is backed by Premier League teams.

Germany will also have a top side along with Sweden and the Netherlands.

Some countries were competitive from the start. Think Sweden, Norway, and Germany. France was in the intermediate group, along with England. The latest wave has been the Netherlands, Spain, and Italy. Doesn't look like the Eastern European countries have made a ton of progress.

I've also been surprised that Turkey is such a non-factor. Their volleyball and basketball teams made big jumps in the mid-2000s and are in the top 5-10 globally.

However, this idea that the US is going to fall to traditional powers in women's soccer has been considered an inevitability for well over a decade, and the USWNT is doing about as well as it ever has.

Yeah I don't think the USWNT, and Jill for that matter, get enough credit for what they've done in the last 8 years after going three cycles without winning a WC.
