I will strive to keep this brief although I am pissed and it may go a bit long.

I tried out Provisions right after it opened because it looks nice and is right by my house. Decent apps and good drinks but... the drink prices are insane. Enough so that it steered me away after going twice because I wanted so badly to like the place. Think $14 for a Makers Manhattan expensive.

Saw a sign out by the street Tuesday. “New Happy Hour! 4-7 $5 drafts, wine, cocktails”. Hot damn! I am in! Finally a nice place for an after work drink walking distance from the house. So I prop up yesterday at the corner of the bar and a foot from my left elbow PAINTED ON THE WALL is a sign that says Happy Hour $5 drafts, wine, well cocktails.

The sign outside didn’t say Well Cocktails but I had expected that to be the case. No big deal. I ask about the well bourbon and it is something I have never heard of, and I drink bourbon so that is odd, but no big deal. I order an Old Fashion. Drink comes and is damn good but a bit sweet for my taste. I finish and ask for a bit less simple syrup in the next one. Bartender obliges and I get a damn good drink. I enjoy it while knocking out some work emails and cruising Tigerdroppings on my phone. It isn’t quite 7 yet and I am walking home so what the hell? I have a third and wrap things up. I ask for the bill.

Bill comes and it is $29! WTH? I ask and bartender says “yeah, I forgot to put that third drink in During Happy Hour. Do you want me to fix it? Yes I do. He brings bill back and it is $25. Double WTH? I look at detail bill and it indicates three Happy Hour cocktails at $5 plus three “well” at $2 each.

I start to ask for an explanation and bartender cuts me off, rudely, and says “Hey I just work here do you want me to get the manager?” Yes, yes I do. Manager comes over and I hold up the ticket and point at the sign on the wall. I then pre-emptively state “whatever you do, don’t tell me an old fashion isn’t a cocktail.” And here it comes.

Manager says “I know but the Happy Hour only applies to MIXED DRINKS.” Huh??? He goes on to explain that, despite the signs by the street and the sign PAINTED ON THE WALL that say “cocktails” the Happy Hour actually only applies to Mixed Drinks which they define as drinks having no more than two ingredients. Like a rum and coke or crown and 7. The ridiculousness of this doesn’t seem to phase him in the least.

The two fold kicker to this story is:

1. The Manager admits that multiple people have taken issue with this since they started the new Happy Hour policy and management has not done anything about it. Even though he recognizes it is an issue. I point out that he is “management” and maybe he should talk to the Owners. He had no answer to that. I ask further if he thinks this policy is sustainable or does he think that I will be coming back? He just mumbled and then...

2. Guy actually asks me if I want him to “take the charges off the bill”? Damn right I do. He then comes back and says “I fixed this for you” as if he was doing me a favor. This is the point where I finally got pissed. Without being an arse or raising my voice I told him that he needed to stop acting like he was doing me a favor. They advertised a price for a product, I consumed the product and was willing to pay the advertised price. They then tried to force me to pay an entirely different price.

I dropped $22 cash on the bar and walked out. I won’t be back. Ever.

3(5) + 3(2) = 21

How was the bill $25

That's pretty shitty.

They should have told you about the stipulation when you ordered an old fashioned and asked about what the well liquor was.

I've never been. Well, tried to go once for drinks but the bar was a private party. Restaurant floor was a ghost town. It was graduation night if that says anything to the lasting power of this place

I simplified math for brevity. Bill was $24.92 after they “fixed” the non HH drink.

Drink = $5

Upcharge = $2

Tax = 10% (Baton Rouge loves their taxes)

And you know what? That doesn’t equal $24.92 at all and I am sure of the total. Now I am pissed I paid cash and left the bill laying on the counter. It was a mess as their POS system listed the drinks together COCKTAIL - 3@$5 and then the other charges were individual as I am guessing the bartender was entering them by hand. Plus the first bill had the two HH drinks and the non HH drinks separate as well. Suffice it to say that the place is a shitshow and that is a shame as it is a beautiful restaurant (Galatoire’s built the building before failing there as a Bistro) and the location is ideal for me. I just hope whoever gets it next knows what they are doing.

Sitting here doing the math in my head I am betting the non HH upcharge was $3 and some change and they left that on the “corrected bill” and just knocked the drink price to $5. So $15 in drinks plus 2 upcharge for $4 and 1 at $3 and change plus tax. That’s the only thing I can figure but I am far from a CPA.

In all my experiences at happy hour, if I ordered a drink that wasn’t included, the bartender would always say something.

Agree, the fault here lies with the bartender. How easy it would have been to tell the customer that the drink ordered would not be covered by happy hour pricing.

Establishments in BR seem to love baiting customers into higher ticket items like no place else I’ve never been.

What truly baffles me is that it isn’t sustainable. This isn’t Bourbon Street where they are OK with sticking it to a tourist for a one time sale. This is a neighborhood establishment whose business is based on repeat customers. Screwing them only serves to drive business away. The entire premise of HH is to bring customers in and then convince them to stay and eat and to be return customers. It’s all just so crazy it boggles my mind.

If you stroll into a bar during happy hour and order a non-happy hour drink (especially at the bar), by their standards, the bartender should mention it before making it. period.

Furthermore how do they figure $5 well drinks is even a happy worth boasting about?

Is the food there any good? The rent must be high around the overpass bc it seems like all the new places around there are expensive as hell.

$5 cocktails is a decent happy hour.

They generally run 8-10.

Right? $5 well should be SOP. If I sit down at a bar in the afternoon, I damn sure better not see an $8 charge for Old Crow or Benchmark 8.

Eh..maybe for a Jack or Tito's.

Not Kentucky deluxe.

I've been to Barrel Proof during happy hour and have ordered a Rye Old Fashioned thinking it was included in the Old Fashioned HH price. Bartender never mentioned anything and then charged the full price on em. They made it right but thought the bartender should've told me that when I ordered...

only if the advertised happy hour terms are as vague as “mixed drink” (the place in question here should call it 5 dollar highballs BTW). If it’s clearly communicated what the discounted drinks are, and I order a good whiskey anyway, I don’t want hear “that costs extra” from the bartender

Thanks for sharing

I think a group of about 12 people from here should go together

Ask about the old fashioned and the happy hour. When they tell you no, have all 12 walk out together.

Management might just change their tune

if you order a WP10 of course it's a premium. If you order a BT old fashioned and it's not on their "happy hour" you should be told that an old fashioned is a nogo.
