The attorney who got him off has been a staunch anti-death penalty person for over 30 years. She was family friends with Jessie Helms too so that sort of does away with your narrative here. She doesn't care if they throw away the key but just hates that the government kills people. As I understand it she had a client who was innocent that was electrocuted early in her career and the courts didn't intervene and the innocent guy died.
