MSY Rental Car Cluster

First off, gorgeous new airport, especially compared to that old piece of trash...
The rental car setup on the other hand, holy shite... It took longer to get from gate to rental car than it did to fly in from Houston. Who were the geniuses that approved the building of the new rental car center, knowing the new terminal would be on its way? Someone’s pockets got greased nice and good like.
What the hell are they going to do come Marci Gras or a big sporting event? What is the long term solution because its current state certainly isn’t it.
I most certainly won’t be flying in there for business as much as usual.

They went through some pretty big events and holidays pre Covid didn’t they?
Might have been just a bad day or staffing issue, but I agree that the set up is strange

I've not heard good things and will deal with it the first time in a couple weeks.
Was generally fine otherwise when I wasn't renting a car.

Yeah it’s great when not renting a car. Airport is beautiful, TSA Pre always open, etc... it’s the 30+ min to get from your gate to your rental car that blows.
Especially when the bus waits until semi full to leave. I’ve done it 3 times in the past month and despise the city of NO more every time.

Do you absolutely need a rental car in New Orleans? Between the hassle of getting to the rental car place and the price of parking downtown I recommend visitors not rent a car if at all possible.

If you’re on business, yes...

For the LSU vs. South Carolina game as few weeks ago, we flew on Southwest from Dallas into MSY and arrived at 8:15 p.m. on a Friday night and wanted to get to the Quarter before 10 p.m., because restaurants were stopping seating at 10 p.m. We didn't check luggage. It took 30 minutes to shuttle from airport baggage claim to rental car area. I could have walked faster, but would have had to cross the runway. The shuttle goes in a loop to the old airport across the tarmac. It took 15 minutes at the rental car counter, then went upstairs to get our car. 30 people were waiting on their car (said it was due to Covid and didn't have clean sanitized cars available). The guy who just got his car as we were arriving said he waited an hour to get them to deliver a car to him. We passed and decided to take an Uber to Royal Sonesta. Got there at 10:05 p.m. and missed all of the restaurant seating. I took an Uber back early at 7 a.m. on Saturday morning to get my rental car and it took 5 minutes to get a car. Total Cluster on Friday night. Worst rental car experience I have ever had.

Have you ever gotten a rental car at Hobby, O'Hare, or Miami? They all suck.

Even pre-Covid car rentals were terrible. Avis never has cars ready and usually numerous folks waiting upwards of an hour to get one from the wash. Worst car rental place ever.

They should have just "put a coat of paint" on the old terminal and never built the new one. The new one actually has less capacity than the old and the old was much more convenient for locals and tourists. As relatively frequent flyer I would rather the old airport.
I suspect given the decline in gate fees and taxes the bond holders may be a little nervous.
It was a billion dollar + boon doogle. They are still building the multi million fly over to get to the airport too and that is clearly not needed.
It was good for the minority set side contractors I suppose like Landrieu Concrete

This is one of the funnier posts I've seen on here. The new airport is massively better than the old one in most every way, except that it inconveniences locals who don't like change. All the other points you make assume COVID travel declines are permanent and somehow should have been anticipated.

My very non expert advice was someone should have thought about the need for a new airport before they sank all that money into the old airport for the Super Bowl.
Maybe someone can explain to me how that wasn't wasteful or inefficient. Maybe it would have been better to pass on the SB that year and get it when all new airport work was done and likely started construction years earlier than it did.
Let's take COVID out since no one could know, plus SB's were notoriously not extremely profitable, if at all. Maybe NO bucks that trend due to cost savings experience with Mardi Gras.
Just seems like a lot of money spent to now have a rental car center built in a now inconvenient location and a remodeled airport not being used.

I am here to add that this is the most terrible car rental set up in any airport I have ever visited... and I visit a TON and rent cars for work.
I have flown into MSY and rented a car at least 5 different times now. It takes a minimum of 30 minutes start to finish coming in and going out. It almost makes me angry over all of it.

The old wasn’t bad, was about a 5 min walk from the terminal to get to the rental car center and then straight to emerald aisle and out the door.
The 20 min bus ride along with all the waiting is ridiculous.
New Orleans going to New Orleans though.

So the bus is gonna be a problem for sure. Can't wait to experience it soon.
I suppose in reverse I better drop my car off early AF to make my plane.

I would. Although the 3 times I’ve dropped off recently, there hasn’t been a line to get on the bus back to the airport, 2 of the 3 times when I arrived and got off at the rental car facility, there was a line of people waiting to get on.
It’s a clusterfrick

can anyone comment on Long Term Parking at the new airport? we have a 5 days trip planned soon and need to know to use US park or the airport LT garage. Thanks
