A golf buddy of mine, who has an independent privately owned business that was built by his father in the late 1940's, recently talked about his fears if the Feds raised minimum wage to 15.00/hr. First of all he has roughly 90 employees ranging from teens to some in their sixties with pay ranges from $8/hr to $20/hr. Many of the lower scaled workers are from a work training program in conjunction with the state and county where he is located.

He told me that if minimum wage were to be increased to $15/hr he would run into several issues that would have to be addressed.

First, his work training program would have to end. Secondly,he would have to handle the issue that willarise from workers already making in the area of $15/hr that achieved their pay through seniority and merit. Third, he will almost certainly cut his employees by thirty percent in order to maintain his profit margins.

How does raising the minimum wage to $15.00/hr REALLY HELP??? It doesn't!

The real minimum wage is zero (when a worker is unemployed)

It doesn't. I've owned a farm and 2 small businesses in Oklahoma for many years (I have sold the businesses) and there's no way I could pay 15 bucks an hour for that labor that an 8th grader could perform.

It seems to me we have an issue where trade jobs are being outsourced to foreign countries where they have workers who have inferior skill to perform those jobs cheaper while we tell our up and coming workers college is necessary and we are left with jobs that cater to intellectual but there are far fewer demands for that so there is an overpopulation of college graduates saddled with debt and no available jobs and do not possess the skills to carry on trade but even so trade jobs are sent out so...where are we?

We need to strike a balance of having a skilled workforce and a nomskilled workforce. We have put too much emphasis on non skilled that soon we won’t have the workforce with the skill to produce a turd sandwich.

Hey I'm all for it at this point. I've told my 16 year old step daughter to get ready to lose your after school/weekend grocery store job because they couldn't afford that.

At this point, I just want it collapse.

The low skill labor employees we employ in southern California cost a hell of a lot less per hour than the low skill employees in southeastern Oklahoma. Duh. I would know.

Teachers with a 4 year bachelor’s degree in Louisiana make about $21-22 an hour. Paying high schoolers or dropouts $15 an hour is insane.

When my wife got out of college, her first job as an accountant paid $11.57 an hour. She's in her 30's, so we're not talking THAT long ago.

I'm not going to go looking for studies right now, but I will mention that this argument has been disproven many times. It is demonstrably false.

Here's what will happen, if you raise the minimum wage to 15 bucks per hour: All of the fast food places that were employing part timers that really don't want to work, and can't do math, or think for themselves, they will lay those folks off. Then they will offer 17 bucks per hour full time and attract better employees. The price of burgers and tacos will go up, but the shake machine will always be working, and the sweet tea will taste like it should. The people who weren't already making 12 or 13 dollars per hour, won't ever see that 15. They won't have jobs.

You really should get into the studies. The most widely cited study in favor of the minimum wage had the authors backpedal on the claims.

This mentality
quote:

If your friend could raise profit margins right now by simply cutting employees by 30% with little to no ill effects then he probably would've already done it it sounds like.

Is why this happens
quote:

stagnant employee wages for decades while companies hitting record profits meanwhile CEO pay raises to 320 times their average worker

There was a time in this country that a business owner was happy to make enough to take care of his employees, put some money back in the business and have enough for himself and his family. Greed killed this business model.

Maybe OP knows someone who still follows it.

I wouldn't want to look for studies if I was wrong either. Good thing I just did a report on this, so I know I'm not.

quote:

Based on CPS data from 1980-2015, we find that increasing the minimum wage decreases significantly the share of automatable employment held by low-skilled workers, and increases the likelihood that low-skilled workers in automatable jobs become nonemployed or employed in worse jobs. The average effects mask significant heterogeneity by industry and demographic group, including substantive adverse effects for older, low-skilled workers in manufacturing.

The findings imply that groups often ignored in the minimum wage literature are in fact quite vulnerable to employment changes and job loss because of automation following a minimum wage increase.

That's from economists at London School of Economics and UC Irvine.

It's pretty easy to look up the adverse effects that occurred whenever the minimum wage was increased. Hours were cut and jobs were lost. Ultimately, the people making minimum wage brought home smaller paychecks. Plenty of news articles about it.

Raising minimum wage is bad for everyone. Old people on SS will be effected the most . Their SS is based off the pay they made and now it’s much higher along with the prices of everything.

Compound this problem with the fact that a certain percentage of students all across the country will NEVER recover from what has been done to them by closing down last school year and this school year. Some will never regain the motivation to return and will have lost the potential they once had before politicians allowed COVID to ruin our country.

They will not be worth the $15 the government forces businesses to pay them. They will likely not perform any job other than manual labor.
