All the TM places are bland, bland, bland, you can serve the spiciest dishes to a 3 year old. I guess they do it to please their bland loving demographic. El Rio Grande is the most tasteless of all, I have no idea how people can eat at Las Palmas or Superior Grill.

What makes that place so special other than it's the oldest Mexican restaurant in Baton Rouge and the OTB guys on 104.5 push it? I've eaten there and didn't find the food anything special and their margaritas aren't that strong.

Best tortillas in BR is mi padres.

Best steak fajitas is tampicana at mi Padres. Close second is the fajita misquite at superior.

I can't comment on other Mexican dishes because I always get fajitas.

We only go the Prairieville location of Mi Padres and those guys in there bust it everytime. We usually order the mixed platter consisting of shrimp, beef and chicken and split it between three of us.

There is no excuse for a Tex Mex place to use packaged flour tortillas. If I wanted that, I would buy them at my local grocery store.

Best food or best restaurant?

The places with the best Mexican food, like La Tiendita, have literally 0 atmosphere. The places with the best atmosphere have average food thats more expensive than the better stuff.

I'm waiting for someone to take an awesome location, renovate the space to create a great atmosphere, and just hire one of the Mexicans from La Tiendita. That place would make a killing.

Sadly Zapatas on seigen by lowes closed. They were legit but that location sucks.
Bean dip, salsa and just about everything on the menu was very good.

I don't know how this place hasn't been mentioned yet, but my absolute favorite place in BR for Mexican is the EL MAGEY buffet. It is seriously legit, and their melon ("mel-own") drink is the most delicious, refreshing non-alcoholic beverage I've ever had, especially during the heat of summer.
