What kind of fish was it?
The smaller reef species such as vermillion snapper or black sea bass, you lose too much trying to get a boneless skinless fillet, so the only way you are going to get to enjoy it is whole. Small flounder (illegal for rec guys, but legal for commercial) also fit this description.
Plus, you get the cheek meat and the crispy fried fins.

I was an adult before I knew there was any other way to eat fish. Still love it that way.
When I'm finished with a whole fish, the bones look like they have been sitting on an ant bed in the sun for days.

Whole fish is intimidating to some, but if I ever go a restaurant that has whole fish on the menu, it's what I'm ordering.
...unless it's tilapia

Who refuses to do this? I ordered some the other day and it came out whole. I didn’t eat it cause it just looks unappealing. People were making fun of me, but I am not eating something that is looking at me.
I rolled my eyes when I read your post because my wife has done that shite before.
She had a privileged upbringing in a primarily female household.
Read the fricking menu. Just commit to whatever they bring you. When a business serves you exactly what you ordered, hold up your part of the agreement. Eat it. Your experience should be about how it tastes, and it’s pretty classless to send something back because of the plating.
If you’re that picky and hard to please with hang-ups that few normal functioning humans can relate to, then do research in advance. We have the internet now. Look at the restaurant’s website. Look at pics on Yelp or Google reviews. It’s extremely easy to know what you’re going to get. Take responsibility for your decisions.
Of course people made fun of you. You embarrassed them. You deserved it. The best thing you can do now is to apologize to the friends or family because they might not want to invite you again. Commit to being curious, doing research, and being less picky so that others might actually enjoy your company at dinner.

Whole perch, sacalait or flounder all day long. Saving the tail for last!

In France they often cook it whole and then the waiter removes the meat at your table using two spoons. Would a more refined presentation and service let you eat it?

unfortunately, yes. Typically the Thai and Mexican places serve tilapia unless you specifically request redfish, which costs a little more but it worth it imo.

$85 tricking dollars for a whole grilled redfish there.

It's very generous in size and usually ordered as a shared course. I think we shared it with 4 people last time, along with sides and small dishes. Plenty of food.
$20/person for an app is insane. I can’t think of anything that expensive and I’ve eaten at some pretty nice places

It’ll feed several…well worth the price for the experience.

Back in the day, nothing better than a dinner date road trip to Hymel’s in Convent. Split 6 boiled crabs for an app. Fishbowl of miller hi life. Whole fried Des Allemands catfish.

Catfish Cabin in Monroe can turn out some fantastic whole fried catfish.

One of my favorite meals ever was a whole branzino at Amalfi. Great experience getting to pick the fish.

You probably still eat hotdogs and chicken nuggets…
