I still need to try Taqueria el Mexicano. It’s not true Mexican, but I love La Papa Loca as well.

Not a fan of La Fonda, some can't live without it.

It’s more of a place to go and have a good time than a place that has outstanding food.

It took me a couple trips to figure this out but LaFonda is the place to go with a group of friends, hang out at the bar and get bombed while it takes a couple hours to get your table, crush a few caldrons of chips/salsa/bean dip, and order the same chimichanga that I always do, swearing that one day I'll try something different.

Our two favorites currently are Vallarta and Tampicos. Vallarta has been pretty solid and actually quite cheap. Tampicos is Mexican restaurant nostalgia for me, they had a slump post-Covid but seem to be back to old form. I hope that place never shuts down, it'll be a sad day.

Vallarta Mexican Grill is also good

It really is better than all of the other Tex/Mex spots around. People are finding out about it and it is starting to get packed quickly.

Basically this, except I get the Don Briggs or Chicken Wings

ETA: oh and the “fried rabbit” which they finally re-labeled to chicken

I thought I heard they lost their rabbit supplier sometime during covid or shortly after ? They did serve rabbit for many years, but it was very expensive for something chicken could replace with nearly the same taste when fried IMO. Everyone dipped it in the cheese dip anyway.

If anyone has an opinion about Mexican food, it’s Lafayette. For the longest time, Mexican was the only style of restaurant that survived in Lafayette

Sorry Baw…Lafayette area has some of the best cuisine in the state BUT it’s VERY lacking in good Mexican.
Superior Grill outta Shreveport is the best thing to happen to your Mexican scene….and it’s just ok TexMex

Agree with you here. Aside from LaFonda, which is its own thing, the Mexican food here is unremarkable Tex-Mex for the most part (including Superior). There are some good Mexican markets out near Scott. There is also a pretty good tortilliera on Johnston, and Super 1 on Ambassador has a lot of Mexican produce and they sell fresh tortillas as well.

Yes, unfortunately for as many good restaurants as Lafayette has, Mexican food here is pretty much low grade dog food

And that’s ok…everything else is damn good. Lol

Lafayette would benefit from a Ki Mexico or one of Chef Balderas restaurants like ElCabo Verde & especially Zuzul.
