Last time I had dessert at a restaurant it was complimentary.

I had made reservations at Ruth's Chris Steak House in Metairie for our 20th anniversary and when we got to the restaurant, they had a few red roses in a vase at the table for my wife and they offered each of us a dessert. We settled on one and split it since we were so full from the meal.

Ruth's in BR will bring a small complimentary cheesecake to the table if it's a special occasion- usually with a blueberry compote on top.

Probably the best cheesecake out there

Explain to me the craze over dessert

You’re basically eating a sugar bomb after eating a huge meal that fills you up?

Are they for people who don’t really like cocktails, and they just want something extra after a meal?

The equivalent of a an appetizer, except sweeter?

ETA: have done a little research since posting. Seems like desserts are very very easy to execute; anyone can do it, but desserts at nice places are usually things you would never make. This makes sense. Ease and fad-hopping.

I always order dessert. I gotta have something sweet to finish my meal. This weekend we're going to Commanders for my birthday... I'll order bananas foster for my son and I, plus I'll make sure my wife gets another so that I can sample it... and some cafe brulot to finish it all off

I had a friend that had an Italian restaurant in the french quarter in the late eighties. I frequently entertained business associate at his restaurant and the food was delicious.

The wife of someone we were entertaining really enjoyed the cheesecake and insisted she had to have the recipe and asked me to talk to the chef. Chef came out and she went on and on about how good it was and if he would mind sharing the recipe.

He at first tried to play it off and finally threw his hands up and said that she didn't need the recipe since he bought the cheesecake at Sam's Club.

This is why you don't get desserts at restaurants.

Fine dining, I always order dessert. They typically have something I'm not making at home.

Yeah, same here.. we always usually split something.. there are some pretty creative pastry chefs in Chicago..

But if we're going out for a burger or something equivalent, I never get a dessert..

This is us. I used to get a dessert drink, but I don’t even like that anymore. More of the dry red, please.

My husband likes a sweet bite (my dad always did too), so I’ll take a taste of his. But always only one for the whole table to share.

Tonight we had mixed berries cheesecake and it was 10/10.

You’re right for most places. But a place with a pastry chef is worth ordering.

New version Emeril’s earlier this month:

Never. I expect to be full after eating. I will eat dessert at home a few times per year and love it.

I really enjoyed this post.

You asked a mildly hostile question, wondering who orders desserts at restaurants, in a tone suggesting that one would be foolish to do so.

You then proceeded to describe the occasions on which you yourself order desserts.

“I honestly don’t know why they even put these on the menu.”

Well, you are not very bright.

You don’t get dessert at restaurants because they may be so good you want the recipe from the chef?

Why does it matter where it came from if it was delicious?

Reading comprehension is not one of your strengths, is it?

I was simply relating an experience I had at a restaurant (where I knew the owner) while entertaining clients.

His kitchen was tiny and there was no way that dessert came out of the kitchen. The lady went apeshit over a Sam's Club cheesecake and the chef admitted it.
