grinded out the 31 strength to use the huge greatsword only to find its a pretty terrible weapon so far.
Good to know....I have that bad boy in my inventory and was wondering if it would be worth my time to upgrade it. I've been rocking the Dismounter for a while now and it does the trick, but I don't think it's going to be the long term solution.

but I mostly find myself not using shields at all.
Shields are really OP in Elden Ring because of the Guard Counter mechanic.

I am wondering if I should keep leveling it? Or save my smithing stones for a better weapon? Finding better weapons or even armor seems very unlikely at the moment.
Given how scarce the smithing stones are early on, I say keep leveling it. But I think later on you can get them pretty frequently.

Psa but I found a lantern, game changer in the caves and dungeons
The lantern is awesome, but I wish you could equip it permanently. Every time I rest or after I die I have to go back in the menu and select it again to use it.

Yep...once you find the various caverns and tunnels you can pretty much mine as many stones of various types as you could possibly need. Those things respawn after every save and death as well.

You can. Also if you find the right stuff, in the 2nd region you can start buying lvl 1 and 2 stones from one of the round table vendors.

Just an FYI on Smithing Stones:
There are two different types.
Reg ones upgrade reg weapons.
Somber Smithing Stones upgrade epics (dunno the actual term).
I've had my eye on a 1H sword called Golden Epitaph for my Paladin build and just got it. Happened to have gathetered enough Sombers to get it to +5 and it is destroying.
Only takes 1 Somber per level, but they're rarer.
However, there's a Master Smith in the Lake area that sells them in limited quantity.

I am through Godrick, as well. I use everything, though: ashes, golden summons, items, everything (except for player summons- I will beat it solo the first time). The bosses in this game are so aggressive I almost think Fromsoft balanced the battles around using your full arsenal. Hats off to those of you that don't use them.

Is prisoner the best class for a first time souls genre player that has 2 hours max at a time to play?
Should I even get this time considering my time is so limited?

After spending many hours getting my arse kicked (never struggled this much with bosses in the other games) I resigned myself to the fact that from soft designed the game specifically to utilize the summons and ashes. They are a key part and once I got over the fact that it felt like cheating, I’ve been much better off lol

Several times with Margit I would summon the jellyfish (and also the yellow summon NPC) and he would just seem to make really short work of them. On the team I beat him, the summons were all still alive at the end IIRC, and basically that means I did a good enough job keeping Margit focused on me to allow such - but it also seemed like he was attacking them a lot and that was how I was able to sneak a lot of my damage in.
I also went into that fight finally beating it at around level 23.

I got stomped by Margit over and over around that level, went and explored the Weeping Peninsula and came back with a stronger summon ashes and a few levels higher and curb stomped him.
This game is definitely more accessible than their previous games just due to being able to grind like that.

Really regretting my STR build now, dex weapons seem much better.
Bleed is overpowered as frick.

Yep, this is exactly why I went Samurai w/ the Uchigatana. shite just shreds through bosses. Hopefully for your sake, there's an NPC who allows you to redistribute your stats. I only remember DS2 having that feature.

I'm holding firm for now on STR but I may still reconsider. My Dismounter hasn't been awesome against bosses but boy howdy will it shred through mounted units (hence the name I suppose) and groups of enemies.

There is but they are pretty far along.
Definitely thinking of restarting as a samurai and just using the uchigatana and dumping all my souls into vigor. I noticed that so many enemies do insane damage and theres no way to mitigate it besides avoiding it or having a ton of vigor. And vigor has a huge soft cap so they clearly expect you to dump lots into it.
Or, and more likely, im hardheaded and will simply level my current character as a quality build.
I have really noticed how stingy enemies are with souls. I killed mergit and was like, thats all i get??
