I don’t mind dying, the most frustrating thing to me is you lose your runes (currency needed for leveling up or items) upon death. You get a chance to retrieve them but if you wander deep enough into a dungeon and get pummeled by group of overpowered enemies, they are good as gone. Last night I played like 2 hours and didn’t level up because I kept dying right as I was on the cusp. The boss fights are hard but fair. I don’t mind dying 20 times to a boss.

The game is great though coming from someone who doesn’t normally like big open worlds. Igot bored of BOTW and even the Witcher 3 but this one has really held my attention. Probably would have let it slide but I couldn’t ignore all the rave reviews

I had the same issue for a bit, but I found a crystal tear I could add to my Physick that keeps you from losing runes upon dying when it's active. I started popping that right before going into a new/tough area and I've been able to level up easily since then.

Hmmm now that you mention that I think I found that one too. Thanks for the tip.

I’m about 30 hours in.

Haven’t used a single summon. Don’t want to. I think it’s nice for newer players but I prefer the pain. Glad it’s been more enjoyable for new players. It’s really helped the sales as well.

The more I play the game the more I feel like I’m playing something special. The game is beautiful...I find myself on foot just as much as I am on mount.

This is just a phenomenal game...so far.

With that said...and this goes for any newcomers...as amazing as this game is...Bloodborne is still superior. Do yourself a favor and play Bloodborne if you haven’t.

You can grind a bit to level up if you get stuck on a boss. And... it is open world so there are some areas that will wreck you. There is no hand holding RED SKULLS to warn you. Just go somewhere else and come back later.

Explore. Don't rush the progression.

Don't be like the Dark Souls snobbish crowd. Use your summons.

The game is HUGE and amazing.

Watch a few streamers to see if you think you will like it.

I have. Didnt last 20 minutes before turning it off to never turn on again.

I dont enjoy nor have the time for the needless death and pain and torture. lol

I like the freedom of being able to go else where and actually compete. The openness and forgiveness of this game has opened a whole new set of fans to it

I finished Dark Souls Remastered about 2 weeks before Elden Ring came out and I made the mistake of starting up Bloodbourne in between. I never was able to beat the first main boss, and I ultimately decided to put it down before getting too invested.

All that to say...I could easily see this statement being 100% accurate just based on my experiences in the first main area. The environment, visuals, and mood were incredibly addicting and I could see it being the best of the FS games prior to Elden Ring. ER is on a whole different level though, IMO

apparently Radahn got a pretty big nerf with the patch last night.

I absolutely destroyed him first try after the nerf....I think they may have overcompensated a little bit tbh.

Bloodborne is amazing and deserves all the credit it gets (Best game of last gen IMO), but I have to agree, ER is just next level. This is a game changer type of game that doesn't come around often. (for that matter BB was this as well at the time)

Very few games reward you for noting something slightly odd off in the distance, then exploring the area. This game rewards exploration. Hidden dungeons. Loot. new mobs. So many hidden locations within the big castles. Took a while to find hidden doors but they still have them.

I waited a bit to play because of the performance issues but I've had none since I started playing.

The game is a masterpiece. It is not too hard. I can see the DS old schoolers thinking it is too easy. I don't know about too easy, but I think they were a little generous with the number of grace spots. that might change mid to late game areas but the starting area, they are all over the place. I will have a large amount of hours on this game by the time i am done. Hell, I had 60 hours in a Vagabond and that was just my standard test the waters character. Then I put about 30 in a mage to check it out. I'll be starting the real playthrough this weekend.

I think Bloodborne's combat is the best in the Soulsborne games, not counting Sekiro. Definitely has cool lore too, but I much prefer the level design in ER. Would be cool to see BB's combat with ER's level design and jump mechanics.

I also agree. Both are phenomenal. I think ER offers a better experience for newer players. They did a great job at letting you play the way you want to play.

I just prefer BB’s world and experience much more. ER hasn’t been the challenge I was hoping for so far. The only reason I think this is because of the open world aspect. Makes grinding easier I guess? It’s like it’s a good thing and a bad thing haha.

Again...I like the pain. I like taking hours to beat bosses because the euphoria of actually getting it done was unlike any other game I played. That was my reward.

I'm 57 hours in right now and I only have 3 of the 15 boss remembrances lmao. The scale and scope of this game are unlike anything I've seen before. That being said, I think DS1 and BB are still ahead of it for me at this point. Something to be said for a tighter 15-20hr experience

As big and fun as ER is, there is a ton of bloat and superfluous fluff. At this point, I don't even know what items and shite I'm getting half the time - it got exhausting having to pause and check every 5 seconds. Also kinda annoying to play through a catacomb and get rewarded with a crafting item at the end The crafting system is so big and so unnecessary. I'm playing "hard mode" with no npc, human, or ash summons, and I've still never come close to having to craft anything. Like why would I craft arrows when I can just pay 20 souls each?

Feels like they included a lot of elements because they felt open world games "need" them. Think it takes away from the sense of reward, though. Would rather less recycled dungeons/bosses with better rewards at the end, as opposed to the other way around.

A ton of people online say that the last quarter of the game is a slog too. Endgame areas and bosses get very tedious and even my diehard From friends have said "I couldn't wait for the game to end." I'm personally kinda excited for this as I want to see the challenge, but I'm scared it'll affect replayability.

Some of the stuff you mentioned about crafting and also the experience getting “tighter” will change later in your experience, or it did for me. I felt like early game I toiled away in a lot of small dungeons but later I was constantly in awesome, DS-Esque areas fighting awesome meaningful fights and finding good rewards. This was probably the last 20-30h of my time in my first play through. Not just story content either, far from it.

I also feel this way. And this is because of the open world. The franchise didn’t need open world. Much like Zelda didn’t need it with BoTW. But both games have shown potential in that area for their first go at it and hope they improve somethings.

When I’m exploring a giant castle complex it feels amazing. When I’m just riding around on my horse doing multiple “chalices” or clearings I just hope I get something that is useful. So far...not much has been useful.

ok well this is amazing to hear, thanks.

I would take 20% of the copy/paste dungeons if it got us 3-4 more legacy dungeons like Stormveil and Raya Lucaria. Would be cool if they did a Shadow of the Colossus style game where you just cruise around the world to the different mega levels and stop at little POIs along the way

Yup. Also my issue with BoTW and it’s shrines.

Just platinumed the game. Thankfully, the normal and bad ending are pretty easy to get. Fighting that final boss 3 times wasn't fun though .
