Thanks, I’ve done all that stuff in Caelid already but wanted to know if I was missing something down there. Is there a way to get to that elevated area later in the game?

If I am thinking of the same area, I believe there is a portal in Liurnia that will transport you to the other side of the bridge. It’s pretty damned random

Sorcery is considered easy mode

I'd recommend strength or strength/dex quality build personally. I think you would be better off learning how to fight early in the game in order to be ready for the shite later on. You can always build up the sorcery/faith stuff later on if you want to mess with magic and incantations.

Options are basically:
STR
DEX
Quality (STR + DEX)
Faith
INT
Arcane
Some combination of the previously mentioned except quality really.
Common combo example is Dex + Int.
If you want to keep it simple, just go STR or DEX. No extra stuff to manage, just hit the enemy basically.
You can also mix in Faith/INT/Arcane without touching spellcasting much at all by just focusing on the weapons you unlock with those stat combos. The infamous Moonveil is Int + Dex for example. You can get by spamming weapon arts with a lot of weapons in this game.
Regardless, I recommend finding a good shield and learning to use it to help supplement your defense. FromSoft has a lot of bosses/enemies with notoriously bad shitboxes that a shield can help you mitigate. Plus it makes things a little more interesting beyond dodge slash.

Solid advice above. I would add to get your Vigor to 20 ASAP to give you some breathing room in HP early on.

Anybody actually beat Malenia? I've been steamrolling a lot of the late game bosses people struggle with like Commander Niall and Mogh, Lord of Blood, but Malenia has been absolutely destroying me.

1) Be perfect, and no I'm not really kidding. She hits too hard and the lifesteal turns it into a brutal war of attrition if you take any hits. Big weapons that are slow especially struggle in this fight.
2) DPS race. You really got to use a good summon for this. Recommend Black Knife Tiche since the mimic tear nerf for this fight. You will also want a nice, spammable weapon art. Preferably with solid range, damage, poise damage, and speed. Let that shite rip over and over to cause poise breaks and get crits, repeat. This strat is extremely volatile and susceptible to RNG, but it can work with some consistency. Let the summon draw a bunch of attention and just constantly fricking hammer damage while she isn't focused on you. Survive for your life when she's focused on you as Tiche does actual good damage.

I can say with absolute authority that the Putrid Crystalian trio is the worst boss in the history of FromSoft. What a complete fricking joke this is
Completely embarrassed that a dev team could think this is quality design. I’d almost bet that the spear crystalians are bugged with their stupid 1-move movement

I did the cheesiest thing so far in the game tonight with the Draconic sentinel outside the capital. I was still having trouble with him after leaving and coming back a few days ago, so I used the Rotten Stray ashes and just stayed away from him.
It’s a rotten stray dog and if they bite the boss enough they’ll start losing health at a constant rate until they die. Felt kind of like a quitter but I was ready to move the game forward and was sick of fighting him.

I’ve done the same a number of times with Rotten Breath. IIWII

Sadly, the game is designed with the summons in mind. For that fight, I used the Mimic Tear and jump+strong attacked them with my katana until they cracked, then the rest is light work. I'd rather have it this way than that bullshite Smough and Ornstein fight from DS1.

The thing about O&S is that they were designed with contrasting skillsets and movements. It was still very hard, but was relatively fair and manageable.
Those 3 crystal fricks are pure bullshite. Gimmick (can only use strike weapons), 3-man gank, tiny arena, all attacks inflict Scarlet Rot, caster with bullshite spells, extreme aggression, and their movesets dont complement each other at all. they just chase you and spam you and you have to get lucky with spacing.
I ended up getting them after an hour and a half, went in naked with power stanced Avatar hammer and Prelate hammer and just ran in circles until I could slip in and get hits. just a miserable experience
I came so close to breaking my summon rule. I know I could've annihilated them if I used Tiche or Mimic Tear but I've come this far, so I just stuck to it. Agony

decided start with confessor.
farmed that first little area around where you get the whetstone for awhile. got some gear. did some exploring.
killed a knight around some coliseum thing and got a ash for my sword. killed what i assumed was an npc invader in that area.
(changed my sword from 130 phys damage to 94 phys and 94 holy, so is that 188 total damage now?)
killed a dark horse rider at night and got a sick mace that has literally twice my dex to use lol. ok i may be hooked. looking forward to exploring more tonight and maybe follow the grace.

frick you, Mohg.

Haha can't disagree with you there. I just have an obscene hatred for O&S since that was the boss sequence I struggled with the most in all of FromSoft games. Up there with the Dancer in DS3, final boss of Sekiro, and final boss of ER.

Make sure to use Tiche against the final boss if you don't want to break your controller
