It's certainly not the worst video game ever made, but it's the worst video game flop of all time all.

It's estimated to have sold 25,000 copies.

The ratio of time and money invested to a game vs the actual sales, there's no way any other game can come close.

So, people that paid for that game are just screwed then, huh?

I mean... releasing this kind of paid game at this point is financial suicide in terms of a company's perspective. OW2 has the market on this genre pretty well secured, and even still you have Marvel Rivals coming which will be F2P in early December.

Marvel Rivals also announced all characters would be free, but I will wholeheartedly acknowledge that this could change whenever they decide they need to make more money.

But what did the people behind Concord expect? This to not just be another Lawbreakers DOA game? Oooff.....

They are refunding everyone that paid for it… so of the little money they did make, they’re giving it all back.

I'll point out that there are payment processing fees involved for all these transactions, taking the original payments and then issuing a bunch of refunds.

So Concord actually managed to lose additional money with every sale they actually did make.

I’m a little scared of what modern gaming can do to something legendary like SOCOM. Can already see the roadmaps and battle passes

I feel like it's grumpy old man talk but this is the worst era of video games I can remember.

The rate at which games I'm actually interested in coming out is at a glacial pace. My favorite franchises used to have like 2-3 years between games, now it's more like 6-8. You can go entire console generations and not even see a release.

The few games that do get released are mostly uninspired, rehashed slop. They somehow spend years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing a game that nobody is particularly hyped for and that just sort of half arse copies mechanics of better games from years ago.

And finally there is this extremely bizarre, palpable disdain that gaming companies have for their core customers. The leadership and creative teams resent the fact that gaming is still primarily the hobby of young, straight males who like fun. They will shoe-horn in social and political stuff in their games they know will hurt sales to pander to a non-existent audience. The people at these companies who know better are probably silenced by fear.

All these high profile flops and all these studio closings, this hopefully is the equivalent of someone with food poisoning vomiting up the bacteria.

The first time I'd heard of this game was today when a video from Asmongold talking about it shutting down popped up on my YouTube "recommended videos." I don't even watch Asmongold videos typically so I was pretty confused.

This is going to be a massive tax write off for the developer.

Was this or Duskborn the game that got money from the Norwegian government?

I'm with you. I wanna see it all burn and we go back to 1997-2010.

In 10 years, they made 5 Metal Gear Solid games. Been a decade since the last one.

In 12 years, they made 5 mainline GTA games and another half dozen spinoffs. Been 11 years since the last mainline entry.

shite is retarded and no, I don't wanna play your weeb live service shooter #3632 or pick pronouns for my fat fupa brown character in your open world walking simulator.

It truly is amazing how they didn’t design a single decent looking character.

That takes skill.

Steam collects their pound of flesh too, so less than $1m on the revenue front

Back of napkin, a studio of ~180 mostly in WA didn’t even break even on ONGOING labor alone for the 2 weeks this thing existed

Every day this was alive it bled money. Unfathomable. Easy decision for Sony

I know people are focussed on the “woke” “ugly characters” aspect, but the above is the most likely culprit for why this game was such a failure. They basically conceived the game as a Guardians of the Galaxy flavored hero shooter… then kept the game in development for more than half a decade past the point when people were excited about either of those things.

And then as the shite cherry on top of the shite cake, had the audacity to try to charge $40 for a game in a genre which is usually F2P.

It would take less time to list the things they did right than to list the things they did wrong.

SOCOM - how difficult is it to make a simplistic TPP military shooter?
Killzone - Guerilla doesn't want to make it? Hand it off to someone else.
Resistance - Insomniac is too busy with marvel. Hand if off to someone else.

make them multi-platform and count the money.

I would add Syphon Filter to that list. The last game on PSP ended on cliffhanger many years ago.

in all fairness that has nothing to do with modern gaming and the fact that Hideo was fired from konami in 2015.
