This, basically. However be warned, they aren't cheap. Even after insurance. All the Ortho is going to do is check boxes after he sees the MRI. Usually it is off to the pain management office first. If that fails, then the knife starts entering the picture. The shot sometimes gives you immediate relief and lasts for a while. Sometimes it doesn't do shite. My thinking was all it was doing is masking the pain. That is why I went with decompression.

What exactly is this you speak of? Traction?

That herniation may have been there well before your pain.

The Clinical Practice Guidelines for physicians don’t recommend imaging for the sake of imaging. Find a good chiro or a good PT, with it which can manipulate your neck and actually load you spine correctly to make long term gains

With 16,000 surgeries in my 30yr ortho career( hip, knee, shoulder and spine) I can honestly say having a spine or cervical fusion is not something I would want. However, Cervical disc replacement is a very successful surgery with great 10 yr data and lumbar total joint surgery is going to change lumbar surgery for the better soon. Don't hesitate to have disc replacement surgery...where do you live?

I’m in Lafayette.

Had meniscus surgery in April with Dr. Duval at Louisiana Orthopedic Specialists.

So if it’s a damn herniated disc, what are my options?

If you have radicular symptoms, you can take some Prednisone to help with the pressure on the nerve. Gabapentin three times also goes a long way for radicular pain.

If it is herniated, PT will be the best thing. And I would find a PT that can do traction. It is a form of physical therapy that relieves pressure on the spine.

That’s what I’m hoping to do.

Did an MRI late yesterday afternoon so I should get the results back hopefully this morning.

Maybe it is called traction but the chiro called it decompression. They put me flat on a table where you placed your head inside of two padded arms that fit under your jaw and it gradually pulled my neck upwards. I was told it gently pulls the disc off the nerve. I would do it up to 20 minutes at 3 times a week. I think the inversion table might accomplish the same goal.

So Doc, can you explain this to me. I don’t see “herniated” anywhere so I assume that’s good news. The X-ray showed a narrowing of the C5-6 disk so I’m assuming that’s where the problem lies.

After I get the results of the MRI, I’ll probably go to and Orthopedic doc if it is a herniated disc.

I would go regardless. You could be looking at cortisone shots to help alleviate pain. They'll get you set-up with a proper therapy session to help the area with the herniated discs, complementing muscles, and potentially finding a solution that would allow you to avoid surgery altogether.

Someone else mentioned decompressions treatment from a chiro. Those feel great, and a good P/T can to them as well.

Neuro Surgeon ....Dr. Appley, Cormier or Trahan....can make u feel better soon...1st 2 guys do a lot of disc replacements. I don't think PT is going to give u any lasting benefits. If I have that X-Ray and your symptoms surgery ASAP! Get your quality of life back sooner.

I had my C5 replaced 3 years ago. Best decision I made was to have the surgery.

No he had C5/C6 or C4/C5 disc replacement....your neck is in bad shape my friend...surgery is the only option if you want to be pain free long term....longer you tolerate the numbness and tingling in your finger and spasms in your shoulders your chances of being symptom free after surgery diminishes. I think u need 2 level surgery...hopefully disc replacment...ASAP

Had impingement and no curvature, could barely look up without shooting pains down my arms. Chiropractor fixed it in 3 sessions. Go every 2/3 weeks for adjustment and it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. Highly recommend. Do your research and find a good one.
