What have you found to be the best tips for staying consistent with your nutrition while traveling? Specifically for trips, not necessarily for vacation. When I’m on vacation mode it’s easy for me to relax and enjoy myself because that’s what I’m supposed to be doing. But when I’m on a trip - business or otherwise - I have a hard time because I’m out of my routine and can’t whip up the same snacks I normally do.

Going to visit some family this week and I always have a tough time staying in line. They don’t eat super healthy and I feel rude making my own meals. Especially since we are staying with them.

Any tips or ideas are welcome. I thought this might be a helpful post for other folks too as I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds himself in this situation.

Relax, enjoy it, and don’t be too strict. Just hit protein goals even with shakes if needed, and get back in line when you return.

I don’t. I use it as a break to reset. If you train hard and eat right a few days isn’t enough to hurt you. Takes over 2 weeks of no training and diet to make a difference as far as losing muscle etc.

We always travel with fiber and magnesium just expecting our diets will suffer a bit. Even when not full vacation mode, local dining is a big part of travel for us so we like to try new things. Helping gut health at least helps us feel better after eating maybe a little worse than what we're used to.

I generally adopt a one meal a day policy when traveling; helps keep overall calories in line without stressing about the meal itself.

I just try to be smart with portion control. Usually when I'm on a trip I eat whatever I want, though. Part of the reason I'm usually careful with my eating is so that every now and then I can eat whatever I want.

I always pack quest bars, shakes, and some sort of mixed nuts to keep my appetite in check so i don’t blow it out.

If you're typically a meal prepper, then just prep as normal for a week, freeze the meals the night before you leave, then pack em in an ice chest with ice for the week you are away from home. Bada Bing, Bada Boom!

If I have the space, I'll pack some protein powder, creatine, and pre-workout to help stay on track with some routine.

Somehow, I've developed a very sensitive stomach. If I get out of my routine and start eating whatever people feed me, I'll be miserable AF...so, I have to stay pretty strict to my diet.

If you don't have that problem - enjoy!

It depends whether you are per diem or billing actuals. You can spend $30 on a salad at chick fil a with extra chicken breasts on it (this was ten years ago) I’m one case.

Places like buccees, QT, etc have great options for cheaper if you’re on per diem. Even shitty gas stations not located in urban hoods usually have hard boiled eggs, etc.

The grab and go stuff at grocery stores can be pretty good too. The salad bar at Whole Foods is good in a pinch, but again, you can spend $25 to get some greens, protein, nuts etc.

I tend to force myself to hit the gym, I’m a runner, so prefer a good cardio session. It wakes me up, keeps me disciplined to hit the room vs staying at the lobby bar with colleagues. And, I feel it keeps my hunger in check.

Unless its a medical issue or you are in training for a serious competition, I would never turn down food from family unless its just not edible, especially if its only 4-5 days. You could also volunteer to cook one night or invite everyone out to a restaurant where you can order a healthier meal. Business trips don't have to be hard, I just try to find something healthy on the menu and watch my portions.

As long as you are eating reasonable portions you should be fine, and can supplement with a trip to the grocery store to pick up some healthy snacks if needed. One week won't really hurt you, especially if you can stay active.

The biggest problems for me with travel aren't about what I eat, its drinking too much (I rarely drink at home) and staying up too late.

I have a similar situation with my family. I take a fruit basket as a host gift along with some nuts and cheeses. Maybe you can take them out to dinner one night to a restaurant that has some healthy options on the menu.
