We’re going to plant flowers, squash, and another round of green beans. Next Sat night temperature prediction has increased from 36 to 39.

I’m gonna wait until we get closer to next weekend. I’d hate to plant and then all of a sudden the forecast temps bottom out. That’d be about my luck.

I planted everything last weekend. If I have to cover stuff, oh well. Soil temp is warm, so I figure they all can handle a few degrees less if it's just for a night or two.
Today was rough. Last week I had planted my cucumbers and cantaloupe into the beds with arugula and lettuce. So today I started harvesting the arugula and lettuce, and then mulching over that with grass clippings. But the wind was fierce. 30mph gusts just made everything difficult.
Then I cut my finger and bled all over the arugula I had just harvested. So free blood meal and nitrogen for the compost I guess. And they're slightly bitter after all this heat. Should've harvested last week.

Predictions up to 41 now. Only problem is the wind howled all day yesterday from the south and is now starting to tick up on its way to 20-30mph from the north. Trying to plant tiny little seeds in that is nuts.

You should have your own YouTube channel for BeeStuff 101. I watched several videos last night on setting up queen cells. Pretty interesting to watch.

I’ve learned a ton from YouTube, but I would feel like a complete moron shooting video of what I do. Plus it takes a lot of time to do all of that.

I built an 8’ raised planter box today for my peppers. It came out pretty good. I’m going to paint it this week and set it up/fill it next weekend. Im putting it in an area of the yard with full sun and it’s also close to a hose bib, so I can set irrigation on it. I’m also going to order some grow bags this week for tomatoes. They’re going in a different area of the yard. I think I mentioned this here but I’m not building a permanent garden just yet because I need to figure out how the sun behaves here in the summer.
My seedlings have been doing really well with all the outside time and real sunlight, so I went ahead and topped my Jimmy Nardello peppers. I’ll probably plant everything out one day next week or the next weekend. Later than usual but just kinda how it went this year. Good to make some progress towards growing vegetables this spring.

I got in my hive yesterday. At some point my brood nest got split in 2. They had always concentrated it on the west side of the box but during one of my inspection in February I had spotted the queen and dropped her on the opposite side. I guess she started laying immediately over there so the 2 mini nests were 2 frames apart.
I ended up taking all the frames out, reshuffling the brood frames to the center, putting partial frames on either side, then filled the rest of the box with food. Dropped everything that was left and empty frames into a 2nd deep box and put it under the original. Hopefully that will spark some comb building and I'll get a decent amount built up before I split them in late April.
Did another mite wash and came up with zero again. I had been using dawn and water but wasn't sure if that was actually killing the mites. Tried again with 90% isopropyl and same results. I'll back off on the mite washes to once a month now.
I really need to either get my plants in the ground or re-pot them. I still have multiple tomato plants in small pots and they are definitely starting to crowd each other out. Hopefully I'll have this coming Sunday off and can get my garden bed cleaned up. I've got a lot of bermuda to tackle.

The forecast for this coming weekend for me has stayed pretty consistent at about 42 for the low. I’m going to wait until Wednesday and if that forecast stays above 40 I’m planting that afternoon.

So are we pretty much good to go if the temp stays above 40? Next Sunday is showing a low of 40 for me. I have tomatoes, peppers, beans, and cukes planted currently. Was thinking of covering them. They've been outside for a couple of weeks now so they're all hardened off.

No need to cover them unless expecting a frost. I know there are rare occasions where a frost can form at 40 degrees, but I've never experienced it. So for me as long as it doesn't dip below 40 I feel safe planting. The plants will be handle it just fine. And odds are this time of year it won't stay that cool for very long which also minimizes the risk of any plant damage.

I've also read that warm soils help mitigate the impacts of briefly cold temps.

Tried some romaine lettuce. It is doing nothing, put a shade contraption over it last week to see about salvaging.

Here are some photos of that planter box I built. It measures 8'x15"x15". The legs are different lengths because the ground where it's going is sloped. Will paint it this week sometime. The interior bottom is just made of slats which aren't attached. There are little gaps in between them and 3 .5" holes in each for drainage. I'm going to lay some landscape fabric down there prior to filling it to make sure I don't lose planting mix through the cracks.
