If anyone in south LA is looking for prolific cucumbers- try some suyo long asian cucumbers.
I planted edmonson, Arkansas, and suyo long and these cukes are growing 18 inches (and more) long and I cannot keep up. Every week (from 3 seeds/plants) it’s at least 10 of them ready for harvest and I only have a small amount of the other ones.
They are great in salads or pickled.
So far- Cherokee purple tomatoes and cherry tomatoes have been great. Jalapeños have been short but fat. Can’t keep up with ONE shoshito plant and a bunch of banana peppers. Herbs kicking arse. Super hots are (expectedly) slower but showing great promise, okra has to be checked daily, and the chickens/ducks are laying like crazy.

I have some critter enjoying our tomatoes that I can’t catch so far in the trap. Pisses me off to no end and I don’t even eat tomatoes. They’re for my wife and kids.

I planted a garden for basically the first time. Cherokee Purple and Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes. The Cherokee Purple are good tomatoes, but have not been prolific. Sun Sugar are producing more, but not prolific. Taste great though and make more than enough for me and my wife.
Operated on two squash vines to extract borers. We will see how they do.

Last year was my first garden and I planted probably 30 tomato plants and got 2 tomatoes. Total. And ZERO cucumbers.
You learn as you go.
I did a few things different that made a world of difference-
Chummed up my raised bed soil with peat, cow poo, and worm casings during the winter.
Shade cloth starting the last week of May.
Bought seeds that were specialized to my grow zone.
Fertilome in early May through now. About to switch to a fruiting fertilizer.
Have read a bunch and am convinced that a garden is never a one year process.
I would say fertilizing and the shade cloth are non negotiables.

I’m working to make compost to improve my soil. I did add Black Kow and worm castings that I bought to the purchased garden soil in my raised beds. I do think the soil will be better next year. I think it drains too well. I’m hoping the compost will help it hold some moisture and provide nutrients.

All of my garden is producing except my Lima Beans. Plants look great and have a lot of flowers but zero beans. Anyone have advise other than what I can Google?

All that rain was great last few weeks, but now the mosquitos are swarming. It's awful. And a critter pretty much decimated my Seminole pumpkins and Butternut squash; pretty disappointing. I did salvage two Seminoles.
Also pictured: Nice resurgence of the tromboncinos, the last of the onions are done curing, and just a couple romas and peppers.

Had to pull all my mini cucumbers. Did not plan well for second crop. Learning by doing.

I'm fixing to rip up everything. The garden wasn't a bust or anything. It actually did ok this spring. I've just been entirely too busy with work and family life to give it the proper attention. The fall won't be much different. I may go ahead and plant some pumpkin seeds and just let them run and take over the garden.
Not even gonna worry about the SVBs.

Bird netting went over the tomatoes today. I work too hard to lose em. I’ll give em a few cherry or grapes a day but no sir on the big ones
Set my last batch on my porch to finish ripening for a day or two before bringing them inside. Went to grab them yesterday evening and a bird had went to town on all my tomatoes

I'm about done as well. Watermelons were a bust for a second year in a row. Not sure why, but I can't get them to grow to size. I've got several cantaloupes on the vine that I'll start picking soon.
Tomatoes still have a bunch of fruit on the plants, but I'm over BLTs. Will probably make one more round of salsa. I've made probably 50 jars of pickles, so pretty well over the cucumbers as well.
I did plant 5 okra plants when I pulled up my squash/zucchini plants. Going to let them ride through the summer. Peppers are recovering from the deer disaster and putting on a lot of fruits. Probably won't have them ripe for another 6 weeks or so, though.

We’re about to start covering some rows also. Planted enough black eyed peas and okra that I might be in trouble.
