Are y’all still dripping water indoors with these?

I'm not, none of my bibs share a common plumbing line with the kitchen faucet, that's the only line I have on an exterior wall aside from the washer. I didn't drip this year, bought a very small 250W space heater to run in the sink cabinet on a Wyze Wifi outlet. It's worked great, set an on/off schedule in the app and basically haven't touched it since Friday evening. I have another little space heater working behind my washer. Nothing froze up even with single-digit overnight lows. Last year it didn't get quite so cold but the washer drain line froze and I had to thaw it by pouring warm water down it.

Are they sold locally? I just ordered 3

I picked up four yesterday at Larry's Hardware in Covington. He had about a dozen left from what came in yesterday.

Home Depot had them (at least when I checked online).

I wouldn't think you'd need to would you? Really every house is not the same so it really depends on layout. If your hose bib is on the opposite side of the house I'd think you'd be in trouble if you didn't drip on a raised home?

if you have a raised house with a long plumbing run to your bib, I'd think there's still a chance of these allowing it to freeze up with that long run. But it starts working at 37* or so it says so maybe it keeps the water moving enough to not?

Bad part is you won't know if they're past their life until it's too late.

The freeze miser won't function if the water pressure drops below 10 PSI. That could be a problem in an ice storm & the water system or your well pump loses power.

I let mine dry then spray WD40 into them after the season, there isn't much to them so I think just doing that is enough. Having spare washers on hand is a good idea, have a large key ring full of them in my garden parts bin.

It works exactly like the thermostat in an engine which gets cycled umpteem million times in its life. Sure it CAN crap out but it isnt likely.

The manufacturer says you should store them in the freezer in the summer.

I think I would rather remove them, but couldn't you just use a Y with valves, and leave the mizer on all year and close the valve/remove the hose in the winter?

Damn that's overkill. Why does it start dripping at that warm a temp?

Thats the water temp, not air temp.

The mizer isn't going to do anything for your hot water lines. I drip both hot and cold. It doesn't take much flow to keep it from freezing.

I dry mine well and put them in a ziplock bag in the freezer until I install them.

Why is this the case? Honestly asking but I don’t think so. My understanding is it basically has a spring like a vehicle thermostat that contracts the colder it gets. This contraction allows it to drip.

I don’t see why psi matters? Unless it has another spring that requires psi? Even 5 psi is a reasonable amount of pressure for water flow just to move it, but if your pressure drops that low anyway it’s going to have a harder time flowing in general, like uphill at your house either way causing you issues.

This is how i have them set up. Y valves and hosepipe stay on all year. Misers stay in shed until first use of winter. Down here, we dont need them but maybe a couple times a year. So first hard freeze Ill put them on. Then usually just leave them on the Y (with that valve turned off) until spring.

Mine are 3 or 4 years old. Only ever had a problem with 1, where it was somehow stuck "open" in my shed. Quick dip in hot water and it was back in business. In fact 1 of mine has been outside on the Y (southeast side of the house) for at least 2 years now. Works fine.

They have a video on their website on this. It’s not an issue. If you leave them outside and it’s cold they open up. So if you stick a cold one on a hose bib it takes a minute or 2 of the water running through it to ‘warm up’ to temp.

It just happened when I installed one 2 days ago

ETA: I bought 7 last week for my house, my parents, and my rental homes. They seem to be working extremely well.

As said best part is you put one on a Y in November and don’t have to worry about freezing all winter.

They are plastic, if your bib gets sun the UV rays will degrade it I wouldn’t suggest leaving them on all year
