Winner.

This is a premium gift that will last a lifetime. The blades are replaceable.

If you don't value your time too highly, you can find them at garage sales for a song. Usually needs a good cleaning and new handle.

Had a pair and thought they were overrated. Expensive, clunky and over-engineered.

Have a pair of simple Corona bypass that I abuse but also keep clean and sharp. They are 15 years old so maybe the new ones are made in shitholeistan like everything else. IDK.

Get him the best quality 1-gallon pump garden sprayer you can find. Most people (like me) buy the cheapest Walmart shite they can find and they have to be replaced every year. Get him a good quality one that will last the rest of his life.

also, for turning in amendments and transplanting perennials, a spading fork is quite useful

Depends on level of work..

I am retired and older.. These are the best tools for yard and more imo..

5 pound cutter mattock.. learned about this when I was younger.. this is a must.. I use it for light digging now that I am older .. is my may digging tool.. easy holes for planting.. great for removing bushes etc

The pruner op showed is great .. I have a pair that ratchets so you open and close it a few times and it cuts through small limbs.. makes pruning easier..

I have aged and the best new tool I have is a simple battery reciprocating saw.. I can put blades on for light shrub trimming.. cutting light wood like2x4…and metal.. I have trouble hand sawing stuff of any significance now and this is a blessing.

Another item is.. i got a bundle last year from Lowe’s for Christmas … It is a lightweight weed trimmer.. blower.. hedge clippers.. I use this a lot. !…. they are small and light weight so not a lot of power.. but because of size I keep all three handy and batteries ready..
the hedgers are short but that is the point.. easy to just pick up weekly etc and spot trim my bushes.. the blower battery drain quick but again ok because I use it to spot blow the patio .. breezeway .. around the pool..

Being light makes it easy to pick up and use anytime for a quick clean up..
