With summer basically here, I've decided to get a new patio. I'm looking at about 10x20 to give me a nice space to cook and entertain.

Does anybody know what kind of cost I'm looking at? I want them to do everything. I do have a small concrete patio now and was wondering if they could pour over that or would that have to be removed?

I'm really open to other ideas also. Has anyone tried other methods that are less expensive? A buddy is trying to talk me into getting those large concrete squares that are spaced out and grass grows in between them, but I'm not sold on that idea! I have enough grass to cut already!

My plan is to do it in about a month so that will give me some time to consider all options.

Why pour over the old one? Just throw a redwood between the old and new and add on?

The pool company charged me $12 per sq ft. So probably $8 per sq ft for little prep work. Probably back up to $12 per sq ft for tearing out the old and pouring fresh.

If the current pad is decent, they can pour around it. You’ll have an odd joint line but otherwise just cosmetic.

Concrete + install cost turnkey will be around $7-8/sqft, assuming access for truck.

How much higher over the existing Will the new surface be?

In atl we got 4 quotes for a 17x10 pad. All four quotes ranged from 23-35 dollars a sq ft. Insane.

i had a similar situation. had a 12x8 patio and wanted it larger. its now 12x25 and i had them pour over the old one. the old one was the cobblestone style so it needed to be covered otherwise it would have looked fonky. they put ~1.5" on top the old one and the new area is about 4" thick.

Preferably you'd want to remove the old one as settling may lead to unwanted cracking. How big and thick is the old patio?

While the squares look cool, they would be hell to maintain with real grass. Turf is an option there between the tiles, though... but with gaps and rolling a grill out into it, could be bumpy.

Another DIY project could be pavers.

10x20 is 200SF (duh) and you're probably looking at $10-$15/SF total depending on demo, access, etc.

Rainy Day Concrete ((225) 620-3177)is a friend of mine and LSU CM grad, take a look at them if in the southeastern La area.

Good luck and keep us updated if you have any more questions....

Several years ago I had a concrete patio put in and I believe it was 12 x 12 or 14 x 14. Seems like I paid $1,300 to $1,500 cash. Not sure if that’s a good deal or not, but it was worth every penny to me.

This. You have to weedeat around each concrete paver or the grass will grow over the sides and look ugly. You cant just mow it.

25 years ago I enlarged a 20x10 concrete patio. Landscape architect suggested laying blue stone in mortar on that base and then laying the same stone on a compressed gravel base adjacent to that. It's served us well ever since. Extra benefit is that it's easy to add/modify wiring, drainage, irrigation in the compact stone section. Only con is that one section is flat while the compact-base section has slight unevenness. Patio table stays on the flat section.
