What do you guys think our best defensive lineup for the infield is right now? Too early to tell? Jay has said multiple times he likes to build teams for Omaha and he clearly valued defense there this year.

Everything is a tradeoff. Our best defensive line up is still going to have Caraway at 3rd, we just won't be quite as defense heavy as we were this year.

But I will say, for a staff that had a knock (probably unwarranted) of not coaching up defense, our defense has always seemed to improve as the year has gone along.

Yep, from 2022 on, every year they improved defensively throughout the season. I remember jay even mentioned in 2022 that they were intentionally wetting down the infield at the box more around the plate to help them out with grounders

I definitely think it was unwarranted. I imagine it came down to prioritizing either offense or defense and he chose offense at Arizona. And when you have big bats like Jacob Berry and Tommy White, they're gonna play regardless of their glove. But both championship runs have been highlighted by extraordinary defense. Tre to Milazzo and Pearson snagging the liner in L:F in 2023 and Brazzy's entire CWS this year.

Agree with you here. I get the sense that Jay promised Caraway a spot at 3rd so my thoughts are that he may put a little more emphasis on defense at 2b. The good news about Jay is he is the best at making the sum greater than the parts.

That’s one I was very worried about losing in draft. Huge pickup up, even if just for a year. Simpson is a day 1 plug and play like Dickinson imo.

Schmidt is definitely in the mix for a weekend starter role, but I would say that it is less likely that he nails one down than he does.

He’s got a ways to go. Can’t expect a year 2 like Kade. Kade had a special mental make up and work ethic.

Agreed

And along those lines, isn't there another portal window before the '26 season begins?

Or am I making that up in my mind? Just seems like Dutton left later last year

There’s at least 1 more portal window opening which correlates with when teams have to trim roster sizes down to 34.

Just for fun. The way too early starting lineup opening weekend with HR potential in parenthesis.

L. Curiel, CF (10-12)
R. Simpson, 2B (12-15)
S. Milam, SS (10-12)
L. Yorke, 1B (12-20)
R. Caraway, 3B (12-20)
L. Brown, RF (12-15)
R. Arrambide, C (10-15)
L. Dardar, DH (10-15)
R. Stanfield, LF (1-5)

A number of people seem to think Yorke will be starting at 1B. Hard for me to imagine him being good defensively at his current weight.

Anybody seen him play or have stats on him defensively?

Bear and Tre have spoiled us recently.

I would think Arrambide's HR potential is among best on the team

The dude hits some screamers

Maybe not as starting catcher though

I’m with you. I’m thinking Dardar at 1B and Yorke at DH.

Serna is going to make an impact next year IMO. He has some serious thump.

I see competition for weekend starter roles as follows as of today…

Friday- Evans

Saturday/Sunday- Most likely candidates being Cowan, Noot, and Moore with a second tier being Schmidt, Williams, Sheerin.

IMO, Williiams is more likely to nail down a weekend rotation spot than either Schmidt or Sheerin.

8 errors in 3’years

2 last year. Hard to say what he’s like fielding

Jay is fricking around and somehow turning the 2026 roster into a more talented roster vs 2025.
