I wonder if that’s it then for the portal this year or were there any other RHP that they were recruiting

UCLA might be the best team in baseball

I don’t see it.

They played Vandy 1 game on a Friday night and lost. They played a series against Oregon and lost. Of course, neither of them were in a super regional.

The next best team they played in a series was USC and they lost that too.

They drew UTSA in a super regional.

In Omaha they only beat Murray State and weren’t all that competitive against LSU and Arkansas.

I would expect Jay to go after another portal pick up. LSU is allowing him 40, he wanted 42. So I'm fairly confident he will bring in 40.

The Gibbs SS was an interesting player. Defense at 3B and back up SS isn't looking very strong, pending what Rucker and Clauss look like defensively.

I don't think he will bring in another infielder though. You can never have enough pitchers. He will likely go in that direction

Which freshman are we expecting to contribute to next year’s team

In the portal era it is really hard for a freshman to start. Curiel was the exception last year and I wouldn't expect any this year. Certainly some will contribute. Paz is said by one account to be the most college ready arm. That being said, he is coming off of TJ. Ricken is a nice looking prospect as well. Serna is certainly going to get a look and should contribute. Harden will probably be running 4th in the outfield. I think it is going to take time for Patrick's bat to be SEC ready. Braun is intriguing and could make waves but he is buried beneath a lot of portal bats. Rucker or Clauss could back up SS but Milam isn't leaving the field.

Watching last nights Hank Aaron Invitational right now. It was played at Rickwood Field, in conjunction with the East Coast Pro stuff happening in Hoover today through Monday. LSU had 4 commits in it. Washington, Davis, Minatee, and Murphy.

Minatee made a smooth play at first base in the first inning going for a 3-6-3 double play. He got the force at 2nd but they didn't get the 2nd out.

Jay was on hunt Palmer yesterday and gave the shortest answers I’ve ever heard him give and it was a very short segment
He must have been bummed about losing reddemann

It really feels like we were outbid on several high profile players this portal season. It has happened in past years but usually we are able to land one or two high profiles each year. We have a solid group and a few high potential guys but no clear difference maker.

This portal window talent wise was pretty mediocre.

Name me one real difference maker (White, Skenes, Eyanson) we missed out on?

I mean, ur right when it comes to being a FR and getting time at LSU, or any top tier program for that matter, and esp if ur a LA kid

We still have 1 committed for next year, but remains to be seen if he doesn’t need to find innings elsewhere. No knock on LSU or any of the other programs, but if ur not a serious draft risk, there isn’t a place for you almost certainly

Ethan Freys are becoming unicorns and what would Schmidt’s agent tell him now if he knew the results of this past year.

Regardless, LSU is still sitting in the most envious position of college programs.

Valincia, Volchko, Osterhouse, Bailey, Reddeman and NIL probably had a role in keeping Ace Reese out of the portal, off the top of my head, plus ones we don't know about.

I agree it appears to be a down year in impact portal players. That being said, we have to be one of if not the top portal destination for any college player. According to this thread LSU is ranked 12th as a team, our top player Yorke is ranked 22nd. Of course there holes in these rankings.

Certainly there are other factors than NIL, like playing time. It just feels like we have been a little limited on our NIL budget. I'm curious what our NIL budget would be ranked compared to other schools. LSU is not the richest school in America and football is the money maker. Is Woodward limiting baseball by trying to compete in football and his stated increase to basketball?

Jay mentioned in a coaches committee meeting last year that a NIL package was offered to two guys from the same team (Liam and Fisher from Ole Miss to TN) that was big enough that they didn't even talk to LSU. I believe we were also outbid for Kilen and Ahuna by TN. Consider what our 2023 team with Kilen, Fisher and LIam, all who went in the first two rounds this year would have been. It didn't matter in the end.

That doesn't necessarily mean TN or any other team has a bigger NIL than us. We grabbed our top players, Dickinson and Eyanson and they grabbed theirs. I also wouldn't like it if one team could get all the top players, even if that was LSU.

All that being said, obviously Jay and staff put in many hours evaluating Volchko and Reddeman, plus others, only to lose out presumably because they were outbid. I'm just curious where our NIL basebal budget ranks and if we took a little step back this year?

I would be surprised if Reddeman chose UCLA over LSU strictly because of NIL money. Probably has more to do with being a Cali native and UCLA has a clearer path to a SP role than LSU.

There was a good trend of high school kids passing on the draft and heading to college. Now, the MLB has countered by drafting those kids higher, giving them great money but below slot value, and using the savings later. It will be interesting to see how universities counter.
The portal talent this year wasn't what it has been. Even the "top" guys have legit question marks. Jay missed on some guys, but he did last year and still won it all. We have great returning talent to go with the transfer haul.

Aside from UCLA and all they have returning…LSU returns a lot to work with in ’26. I like what they added from the portal to supplement what they already have.

Are we wanting a LSU-UCLA CWS final?

I still wish us and wake would have played in the final but Florida was a good opponent too

I have confidence in our pitching staff heading into next year. We bring back good arms and added more. Same for OF. The OF will be good with any combination.

Some things to pay attention to are development behind the plate and how the infield shakes out around Milam. And health. We mostly stayed healthy last season, which is a big help.
