There's no way around it: a loss to SC at home would be brutal.

Yep.

It makes the road to the NCAA Tournament much tougher. The loss @ A&M, in isolation, wasn't "bad". It was a conference road game without your most impactful player that you had an opportunity to win. But in the greater context if was a missed opportunity to get a conf. road win when you know those, regardless of opponent, are not easy. Lose to USC at home, then you really start to struggle to see where those (at least) 8 conference wins come from outside of some unexpected wins (such as a home win vs Kentucky, or road win vs Florida or Arkansas)

I can't find anything. Does anyone have any inside information?

It is very frustrating in the degree to which it is so challenging to get information on LSU men's hoops.

As has been detailed earlier, to my knowledge there is only one media person in the area dedicated to covering LSU men's hoops and he's a knowledgeable basketball guy - but he's not going the extra mile to get the inside info and honestly, I get it - he's probably not being paid enough to do that. It seems to be strictly a part time gig - Brown at the Advocate.

So unless you know somebody or you want to call CMM's radio show and ask, you generally won't get much info. The info we have is what McMahon told us during the ESPN broadcast Saturday.

At the time of Pinson's injury Wade was 49-25 in SEC play (.662). That means consistently losing SEC games was an outlier relative to Wade's past performance. So there was reason to consider the anomaly was due to other reasons besides poor coaching.

Before last week, McMahon was 14-40 in SEC play (.260). Winning SEC games is the extreme outlier under McMahon (considering he's lost ~75% of them). So I don't think people are willing to consider the injury to Thomas is likely the only reason LSU would lose.

That's kind of how the benefit of the doubt works

I agree with the sentiment of his post and yours...but anyone who says LSU wouldn't have beaten Texas A&M easily if Thomas played is either crazy or intellectually dishonest.

I would say losing Thomas is a significantly bigger impact than losing Pinson.

McMahon has been a disaster but we gotta call balls and strikes.

Gonna drop another one tonight and use the we’re hurt excuse again. Rinse and repeat nothing we haven’t seen for the past three years

Woulda, shoulda, coulda, and didn’t. End of the day there’s always that one missing piece where we beat everybody with but can’t beat air without. Bs

I think the gist of what the poster is saying is that LSU is a pretty significant favorite (relatively to SEC games) tonight even without Thomas. So if they lose the game the absence of Thomas shouldn't be the go-to excuse for the loss.

Ultimately, the benefit of the doubt is gone. Given how the game unfolded does it seem like LSU would have beaten A&M with a healthy Thomas? Yes. I think most would agree with that. But that's only speculation and a coach who's lost 75% of such games doesn't get the benefit of the doubt.

That year Pinson went down LSU was rolling. They had (to that point) gone though the non-conf. schedule undefeated (12-0). They were the No. 1 defensive team in the country. While they lost @ No. 11 Auburn to start SEC play, they bounced back by beating No. 16 Kentucky and No. 18 Tenn. There was nothing to suggest when looking at the season to date and Wade's career SEC record that LSU was about to lose 6 of their next 8 games. Yet, that anomaly happened. So it made sense to attribute it to the loss of a key player.

When you've lost 75% of your SEC games people are less willing to chalk up another loss solely to the loss of a key player. Like it or not, that is the perception hole McMahon has dug himself in over the course of 3 years. All but a small handful of people are done giving credence to excuses...even if on Saturday it probably was a reasonable excuse.

Go back and look at the threads after the Vandy loss, go look at threads after the Ole Miss loss. Wade was rightfully blamed and criticized.

I’ve had that injury multiple times, it never fully heals. The trick is to get to a point where it isn’t super tender and can take the torque of playing at full speed without pain but it’s different for everyone. Could be a couple weeks, could be more, it’s just that type of injury.
Yeah, I don't have a great feeling knowing he played on it as a freshman.

Also, sorry for the attack, you've been cool lately. Let's win the game tonight!

No worries man. I think if we take care of the ball we’re gonna win tonight. Still think Sutton has to be more involved. We do need DJ back, I guess we’ll have a better idea of what the latest injury was depending on if he’s back next week or not. If it’s just a slight twist he’ll be ok but if he stretched the ligaments again or rolled it we could be looking at a real problem.

We are already looking at a real problem. By the time DT can play, the season will be over.

You’re right, I was operating under the assumption we’d win last night. SC is a bad team, that should’ve been an easy home win.

I said he needed to win the game last night and expected we would despite DJ not playing. Big hole now. Either he wins some games he is underdog in or he's gone at the end of the year. Wish it would have been with full team available but it is what it is. Can't get down by 28 and expect to win although they gave it a run.
