Exactly.
You can argue about some of financial soundness of some of his hires (75 million to Jimbo; $2.5 million per year for a WBB coach), but his major hires ALL had a history of major level success. Jimbo, Buzz Willaims, Mulkey, Johnson. The only person you could argue doesn't fit that mold is Chris Petersen. But Petersen beat plenty of major conf. teams at Boise St and sustained success very few, if any, small conf. HCs had in their tenures (92-12 in 8 seasons at BSU...with 4 of the 12 coming in his final season)
He may be a good coach, but if LSU does end up replacing O after this season Napier will be well down the list of potential candidates

Where does everyone keep coming up with this shite? He was never offered either job.
Lower mid level coach playing a bunch of lower mid level teams in a lower mid level conference.
The Curley Hallman experience was a disaster. Napier would be too.

If Napier is the best that we can do, then LSU is in BIG trouble. I'm not saying that he's not a good coach, but the last thing we need is to hire a "no name" who's never been a HC at a major Division I program, and then, God forbid, have to do this all over again in 3 years if he fails.
I hope that Woodward will shoot for the stars like he did with Mulkey. We are one elite coach away from being a powerhouse again. We just need the right guy at the helm.

So does anyone here remember the coaching search to hire Les Miles?
We had so many big names to replace Saban, but we hired the Oklahoma State coach out of left field.
It’s very tough to get a successful Power 5 coach to move… It affects not only his family, but all the staff he has built up relationships with.
Yes, shoot for the stars, but realize you’re probably going get a young guy that’s hungry and wants a shot at SEC football.

LSU isn't hiring ULL's coach.
We hired literally one of the worst coaches in Ole Miss history who was fired for not meeting even their low standards, but you think someone at LSU is going to draw the line at Napier?
Don’t put anything past LSU.
Joe "I am The Search" Alleva is not making the hire.

He’s the only semi-unproven HC that I’d be happy with to be honest. He’s done a lot at ULL and that’s worth something.

He's not the answer.
Not today at least.
You may be right but you either hire him now after you fire Ed or you don't hire him at all and potentially have him beating your arse for years to come.....who knows?
Did you think Saban was the answer when he was hired from Michigan St? I know a lot of people didn't.
ETA This is probably the last chance LSU will have to hire Billy Napier. If you think he gets better and is a viable LSU coach with more experience....you better bite now.

Tons of people want Mario Cristobal who was fired from sunbelt team FIU but Napier isn't good enough bc he's in the sunbelt. Lots of logic here.

Yeah, because LSU only hired phenomenal coaches before Alleva.
I’m certain, as with most things, there’s a list of who Woodward wants, then there’s a list of who his bosses want. We’d be so lucky if Woodward was given carte blanche to hire who he wants, but we all know it’s just not that simple at LSU.

Yeah, Cristobal has done wonders at Oregon…

His first hire at Washington was Sark. 0 HC experience (he was an AHC) at the time. He hired Peterson when Sark bolted for USC.

Napier can recruit. He was primary recruiter at Bama for Cam Robinson, Jerry Jeudy, Trevon Diggs, Calvin Ridley and others. He’s also recruited really well to his level at ULL.
