I mean I really liked his explanation on how House and Denbrock/Davis will be involved and it made sense to me.

Letting people up the middle block FG and Xpts was it good either. I can see why he involved Davis.

Many major programs don’t have a dedicated special teams coordinator.

Alabama doesn’t.

Few teams did until the NCAA added an assistant a few years back.

This isn’t new. The multiple aspects of special teams are so different anyway. A kick return and a field goal attempt have nothing in common.

Having one guy in charge of both never made much sense.

Lol, what an awful nonsensical comparison.

So who is responsible for picking 10 guys to practice returning kicks, training them up, and ultimately deciding who our kick and punt returners are? Since that was supposedly the biggest issue and all...

I think it makes all the difference in the world for this decentralized system to work in that analysts can now do hands-on coaching in practice.

Sounds to me like Lester Erb is the special teams “coordinator” in all but title.

All of the other staff members already did these other duties. To think that the STC is out there teaching 20 different skills and disciplines is silly to begin with.

In the new approach, offensive line coach Brad Davis and offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Mike Denbrock will handle blocking for extra points and field goals. Defensive coordinator Matt House will help with kickoffs

this makes the most sense to me, how an OL coach wouldn't be the one responsible for the blocking schemes on field goals is beyond me.

I will give him the benefit of the doubt but this just doesn’t seem like a good plan. Would it not just be easier to hire a special teams coach. It seems to me the guy he wanted at Ole Miss decided to go to ND.

I agree with the first part of your statement. 2nd part doesn't make sense. If biagi went to notre Dame, he could've just hired someone else.

That was one of many issues. As for who picks returners, I'm guessing that they're going to look at athletes, starting with WRs and guys in the secondary. You know, the guys that Denbrock, House etc already coach on offense and defense

They tried Nabers back there last year, and although he failed as a returner, we saw why they wanted to try him. He's a stud, and we expected him to be behind Boutte as far as WR targets.
There's probably some more guys on the team, that you see in practice and say "we need to get him the ball in open space". You don't "train them up", they either have it or they don't. Hopefully one of them can catch the ball, otherwise you revert to putting a hands guy back there and accepting that you will get 5 yd returns.

BK actually was working in four special teams coaches. Two stayed where they were and two made it to the LSU facility then one chose somewhere else (ND) then the other stayed wheee he was (Iowa).

Who knows why in the end ….I can’t imagine salary (?).

We can only work with what is offered by the head coach…and if it blows up he will be the head that roles.

But that's the question. Who decides?

That's not true at all. You have to practice fielding kicks.

If you are competent on offense and defense you don’t need your special teams to win games you just need them not to lose them.

I understand that compared to last year, this year you have to stop the bleeding, but you absolutely should be utilizing special teams as a game changing unit and not a place holder.

I am thrilled with Kelly and the job he has done, but if this assumption is correct, I don't like the concept at all. Going into '23 we are still below quality numbers as compared to most years and a great way to counteract that is to excel at special teams. I really hope this isn't the mindset moving forward, and is only a stop gap to prop up the abortion of a unit it was in 2022.
