Psst…if you can’t beat Clemson, then you don’t belong in the playoffs anyway.

Then why is SMU in the playoffs?

Saban couldn’t hide his bias today but unfortunately he had a point about strength of schedule

No he didn't. Alabama played one P4 non-conference game - Wisconsin (5-7). Alabama's strength of schedule was propped up by it's conference schedule. Bama didn't schedule their SEC games. They were mandated. They also lost 3 games. Beat Tennesse and you are in and they are out. Beat Vanderbilt or Oklahoma and Bama gets in over 2-loss SMU. Ole Miss and South Carolina also get in with 2 losses over SMU based on SOS. Strength of schedule should give you an edge over other teams with the same regular season record. It shouldn't negate the fact that you lost more games - 2 of which you lost when favored by 24 points and another where you were favored by 14 and lost by 21.

How about Brian Kelly earn his salary and outcoach Dabo?

This is the real answer. Kelly should have LSU ready to beat anyone, anywhere, anytime. If you can't win games against top teams, you don't belong. If you have to shirk games against top teams to get in, you will probably lose in the playoff. LSU needs to be much better than they have been the last 5 years, and it is Kelly's job to get them there.

Here is what he said:

If we don’t take strength of schedule into consideration is there any benefit to scheduling really good teams in the future

SMU getting in over Bama was being discussed (which he couldn’t hide his bias about as I already said) but the point he made above was in general about all of college football not this season but in the future (MOT correctly pointed out that didn’t affect anyone this season). So, yes, he did have a point.

Maybe we should just have a better team and coach better so we win.

Chances are you're going to get your wish of shitty OOC games. And I'll get my wish of more Saturdays freed up in the fall.

Out of control commercials.
Shitty OOC games.
Pro athletes.
Free agency.
Meaningless conference championships.
Opinion poll-based playoff.
Corporatized tailgating.
Piped in music.

I'm thinking I may just stick with the Saints and forget about college football.

He still didn’t have a point though. This quote was a dramatic exaggeration based in his disappointment over Alabama correctly being left out.

There is no evidence whatsoever that strength of schedule wasn’t a consideration. It just wasn’t the only consideration when comparing Alabama and SMU like he wanted it to be.

My biggest gripe is the uneveness of our conference scheduling. Compare Florida's schedule to Texas or the OU schedule to Texas. And since the SEC Scheduling Czar, Mark Womack, for the last 30 plus years, went to high school in Tuscaloosa and went to Alabama, maybe that should change since all of these other changes are being made to the SEC and college football. And while we're at it, it's time the SEC offices move out of Birmingham, to Atlanta or maybe Nashville. And, LSU or any other school in the SEC has no incentive to schedule any OOC games with top teams early in the season before conference play. Maybe OOC teams need to beef up their schedules but we don't.

In the SEC, there isn't an incentive for playing the tough OOC teams anymore.

100%. SEC schedule is tough enough. I get that people don't want to see cupcakes in the regular season schedule and want to play an interesting OOC game, BUT, if we perform well in the regular season, we will get those tough OOC games in the post season.

Not if it cost us a playoff spot. Clemson will be very hard at home for the first game. What do you get for it a pat on the back if you win. A very narrow path to the playoffs if you lose with the tough SEC on the horizon. Give middle Tennessee all day especially in this portal age where teams need time to gel.

So how do you think 2 loss teams like Tennessee, Ohio State, Penn State and SMU get in over Miami, BYU, Memphis and Army who finished 11-1?
