College Football and State Pride | Recruiting

Specifically… LSU & Louisiana Football Pride
Curious to know what people think. As a fan, do you prioritize winning at all cost, or is your college football fandom tied to state representation?
Following our portal pick-ups and it feels strange. We’ve always supplemented with out of state talent. Now we’re depending on receivers from California, running backs from Florida, lineman from Georgia and Alabama, safeties from California.
For me, the fun of college football was always state pride and the banter with people from other areas. My state vs. your state.
DL like Booger McFarland, Marcus Spears, Chad Lavalais, Glenn Dorsey, Marquise Hill.
Corners like Tyrann Mathieu, Tre White, Randall Gay, Jonathan Zenon.
Safeties like Laron Landry & Craig Steltz.
Linebackers like Bradie James & Devin White.
Running backs - Kevin Faulk, Domanick Davis, Alley Broussard, Justin Vincent, LaBrandon Tofield.
Wide receivers like Josh Reed, Michael Clayton, Devery Henderson, Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Malik neighbors.
Offensive line like Andrew Whitworth…
I could go on. It’s the guys you watched play HS ball in your local town.
Saban taught the country that if LSU could lock down the base, LSU would be tough to beat.
Not that my opinion matters… they say that CFB is “up and to the right”, but I only watched two games this year and I used to never miss a game. I suspect that others are just hanging on while in parallel the sport is attracting a new type of fan.
I’ll watch again next year and if it’s an exciting season I’ll probably watch them all. I’d be lying if I said that it’s as enjoyable though.
As a Saints fan, I expect them to get the best players from across the country. College football was always more passionate because it was a true state product.
Anyway… I’d rather finish top 20 with La guys than win the title with guys from California.
Plus I think that those out of state guys don’t have the same fight… probably why we’ve been soft on defense lately.

I would think you would want to shore up your instate talent first the supplement with outside talent. Maybe 50% instate? Seems we bleed all the homegrown out, and yeah it basically then just becomes pro sports part II, state pride seems to be a thing of the past now

I used to think like this but then I realized that the majority of our roster has been from LA and we’ve sucked. While teams supplemented by players from around the country (Ohio State, Alabama, Ole Miss, Oregon, Miami) are elite and in the playoffs.

Looking at the way some get excited when we land a California receiver, it looks like the majority here just want to win - more similar to the NFL fan.
I’m not convinced that this board is indicative of the fans across the state, though.
I live in Texas now… it’s not going to be as fun beating a Texas school when your key starters are from Texas. These fools are already convinced that most of LSUs roster are Texas boys anyway.
I’d rather win or lose with La guys… but we’re never getting back to that.

LSU is LSU.
2 players will end up having statues here (or at least jerseys retired) that came from Ohio State & Arizona State, times have changed.
We still recruit LA out of high school. It’s up to them if they want to leave after 1 year

The problem is you recruit local kids, and if they don't truly love LSU then they're gone after year 1 for more PT or money. It's just what CFB is currently. LSU isn't the only program dealing with this.

Ole School thinking ....we are in a new era of College Football and it is not at all like the College Football we all new and loved. If the NCAA doesn't put a one year sit out for all transfers starting very soon, college football will self implode. Hate what's happening.

Exactly. That's the way it should be, and was a cornerstone of earlier LSU football teams in the eras of Paul Dietzel and Charlie McClendon. The epic games against Notre Dame and USC in the 1970's featured teams relying heavily on Louisiana baws.
More or less on the same subject, I can't understand this board's obsession with the Manning family. Even though they relocated to New Orleans when Archie became a pro back in 1971, they've made it known for now three generations they want nothing to do with LSU. It's high time to let that fascination die a natural, dignified death.

Love this post. We have lost so much passion as a fanbase. This is all passion right here. that actually brings winning.
Great post.
Great post.

Berry and Green are likely the only offensive starters from Louisiana next season.

This would qualify as "back in the day" conversation piece...

It’s a different game today from what I can see

The draw to LSU was made possible by Saban who saw the talent rich state with a single major university that all these kids wanted to play for.
Now this will remain true for freshman recruits and I think you can still lock up much of the instate recruits, but not like it used to. The NIL weakens that draw now. So what Saban, Miles, Ogeron were able to do with in-state recruiting will be diminished. It is all about money and if you can hang on to guys.

Like I mentioned… I believe that we always understood that we need to supplement with OOS guys. QB is a great example.
Baseball is a little different for me, but I admittedly root for the the Gavin Guidry and Kade Anderson types, even more so than the Paul Skenes of the world. That’s just me.
Not a popular opinion but I don’t really follow the out of state pro careers of guys like Joe Burrow and JD. It was a purely transactional relationship.
I do tend to keep up with the Louisiana athletes.

Rudy Niswanger was also an excellent starting OL from Louisiana on some excellent LSU teams.

This is crazy to think about. I won’t recognize the team other than the logo on the helmet.
