But I’m sure he will be a freshman all American and hit 20HR next year.

Quite literally no one said this.

Just a couple of years ago Dylan Crews, who was considered a first round lock, passed on millions to come to school. It worked out pretty well for him.

Want both, will be hapoy with Schmidt.

Gross generalities, but:

1. If went to Catholic, family is not destitute
2. He grew up in BR at a program where previous guys went to LSU, saw cganpionships first hand, and signed HUGE contracts

I don’t know how good he is or what he’ll do in college, but if Jay Johnson wants him that’s good enough for me. Glad he chose LSU!

He was considered a late first/sandwich round/eariy 2nd pick. But he probably did turn down around $1.5 million or so.

I’m not sure if Crews was ever as highly regarded as Curiel in HS, but I think they had somewhat similar situations where they didn’t take the next step people were hoping for.

Difference with Crews is that he always had power and needed to get the bat better, which he did. Curiel has a good hit tool, with absolutely no power. Not sure if he will ever be able to really fix that.

He’s projected in the third round. No one who actually knows anything is saying he’s a top ten pick.

Below you can see Crews’ complete 2020 draft scouting report:

“Crews entered the 2020 draft cycle as one of the top hitting prospects in the prep class. As an underclassman he showed impressive power to all fields, to go with electric bat speed and a clean righthanded swing. After the first few weeks of the summer, however, Crews started to struggle, showing significant swing-and-miss and plate coverage concerns. Crews waved over breaking balls on the outer half of the zone and swung through fastballs middle and up that scouts expect the elite prep hitters to handle. At his best, Crews has shown above-average hitting ability with plus raw power, solid-average running ability and good defensive instincts in the outfield. He has a simple load and setup at the plate with some of the quickest hands in the class, and the ability to change games with a single swing. He also has above-average arm strength. Because Crews is more likely to be a corner outfielder at the next level, that puts additional pressure on his bat, and he simply didn’t hit up to the lofty expectations teams put on him over the summer. Teams are skeptical of right-right corner outfield profiles out of high school, and of the 13 players that fit that demographic who’ve gone in the first round since 2010, only two weren’t projected to be center fielders (Alex Jackson, who was drafted as an outfielder and Courtney Hawkins). Crews is committed to Louisiana State and is expected to be a difficult sign. It wouldn’t be at all surprising to see Crews make it to campus, get back to his typical self with the bat and become a first-round pick in three years.”

What are you babbling about? He was rated as the 10th best HS prospect at one time. They also draft college players and JUCO players. He was once thought of as a late 1st round pick but he slipped to the 3rd or 4th round was probably looking at $500K or so. Hence, he’s coming to school.

No he isn’t- he’s rated top 10 HS recruit by some services but in reality he’s really a top 100 kid that has a lot of potential and needs to get in a college s&c program

This is the best bottom line summary of Curiel I can find. Great add for Jay

I'm really trying to understand this because I agree with you. Was his marketing just really good? Is his Dad famous or something? I just don't see it.

He’s been playing in very big tournaments since he was a kid. Perfect game has stuff on him from when he was playing 9U baseball. He’s mentioned in 199 articles on their site. He was listed at 5’11” 145 lbs at 13 years old. He’s listed at 6’1 175 now. As several others said, he didn’t fill out as expected and hasn’t improved his game the way scouts thought.
