From Slidell, it is shorter/quicker to go I-10 to Mobile; I-65 to Montgomery, then I-85 to ATL. IMO, there is nowhere to eat that is good on that route.
I-59 to Meridian, then I-20-59 to Birmingham, I-459 around Bham and then I-20 to ATL is about 15-18 minutes longer driving. TWO good places to eat that way...Weideman's in downtown Meridian and Baumhower's Victory Grill in Tuscaloosa (I-59/20 exit to Moundville an the café is in an area with motels, etc along I-59/20. LINK ) We just ate at Baumhower's today. Good menu and good food. Lots of big TV's and bama sports crap.

Made this trip many times. A few minutes quicker and way less hassle (traffic/cops) to go through Mobile/Montgomery than through Birmingham. Not as many places to eat though. We always stop at a mall just East of Auburn with several different choices.

Didn’t have any trouble with the tunnel?

It's been awhile but they did have a Dreamland BBQ in Mobile just off of I65 on Old Shell Rd. Not sure if it's still open. Also, I'm not a huge fan of it but some people really rave about it.

I guess I’ll be the first to actually name a place on the route.
Bate’s house of turkey

You get off of 10 to 65 before you get to the tunnel.

Sorry, live in Texas so I do not go that way often.

Depends where you’re coming from but when I was a kid, stopping over at Peach Park in AL for an ice cream was a treat.

There are tons of spots in Birmingham but should be noted that traffic is hit or miss due to construction on 20/59.

Is The Shed still open? Ocean springs MS? Haven’t been in years but it was some pretty damn good BBQ back in the day
