Are you trying to argue that no walk-on at LSU receives any type of academic or other schollie. You may want to re-visit your NCAA rulebook.
You are correct that a walk-on with a schollie would count against the 85 if he ever played.
Monk is correct. The key is if you are a walk on on some sort of scholarship and play.
There is a threshold of if you play with in you first two or three (not sure the exact number) years then you also back count against the 25 yearly limit for your class.

No. It was chicken shite to offer the kid a scholarship, then ask him to take a greyshirt in August.
This.
I am a fan of this staff. I like em. But damn we are seeing some funny shite with numbers, maybe this has a little to do with his clock managment...is Les dyslexic?

How so? Every person we signed was offered.

They're reporting now that he is reconsidering.
Obviously Miles must have handled the situation right or he wouldn't be reconsidering.

Or maybe he just loves LSU that much. It doesn't mean this wasn't handled poorly by the staff.

Eh, maybe so. But chances are, it wasn't. I know 90% of the public wouldn't reconsider LSU if it were handled poorly.

I fell bad for Porter but I would like to add one thing to this discussion. A week ago the LSU offered a scholarship to another punter, They were almost certain that Brad Wing was going to have to go the Jr. College route. That scholarship offer is now a problem also. But who was to say or how would they know that they all would qualify. There was a certain player on the North Shore who committed and then changed because his scholarship was involving a possible greyshirt. If the coaches would have known what what fixing to unfold they could have prepared better. Another question, being the Brad Wing is not a U.S. citizen, would he even be eligible for tops? This is a very unfortunate situation, what happened to the cheerfulness when we found out that all had qualified?

i dont see why its a problem, Miles loves to have excessive kickers and punters under scholarship

From our rivals mod who just recently spoke to Porter
quote:
I just spoke with Porter...
I felt sorry for the kid. He woke up in the dorm at LSU this morning to go workout and was called to Miles' office where he was told they didn't have a spot for him.
He is back home now and is trying to figure out his options. He's talked with Tennessee and the Vols are certainly an option.
Porter said there was a small chance he might take the grayshirt (as of now I would call that doubtful). And other schools are calling like Auburn and Mississippi State.
He hopes to have a decision and be in a camp by the end of the week.
He does have to win a waiver to be eligible immediately. It should not be an issue. Tennessee has won that in the past with Antonio Reynolds.

So, for the guys that are saying, "that is the way it goes," or " Miles is in a Lose Lose situation."
It now looks like he's fifty fifty.
Do you want him or not?

Point was covered, if the kid thought he had a full ride this year and all of a sudden didn't it's a bush league move. He could have stayed, but it could have been handled better as well.
A greyshirt is Bush league? Yes the timing sucks but how is it Miles fault that the clearing house took a lot longer than normal in clearing the players this year? Or are you suggesting that the coaches were going to hold an emergency meeting the day of the clearing house announcements to decide who would greyshirt. More than likely once they found out everyone cleared Miles set aside a time when the coaching staff could meet and discuss a final decision who would get the greyshirts. A limited time frame tends to hamper things. Any way you will believe what you want so I guess there is no point.

just a shitty situation for all parties involved.

If you are a recruited athlete and the scholarship comes up after you've been actively recruited, i.e. he signed a L.O.I for a football scholarship, any type of scholarship or aid then giving to the student will count against the 25 scholarship limit.
If it was a walk-on not recruited for the sport or not very actively, then it would be okay to get TOPS for a year and then join the team and NOT count against the 25.
The key is that he signed a LOI for a football scholarship. Preferred walk-ons and walk-ons don't and thus only count to the 85 scholarship total.
That is again why its an issue people keep ignoring.

Also confirmed Porter was not told word 1 about greyshirting until yesterday. Stay classy, Les Miles.

If it wasn't gonna be Porter who would it have been?
The other non-LB choices were..
Armand Williams (position of need), Nic Jacobs, Worle (position of need), Sam Gibson (reportedly impressive), Ken Adams (position of need), Brad wing..
Yeah, better Porter than the guys above.

so he shouldn't have told a kid before Aug 1st that he may greyshirt because he is not at a position of need? Got it.

It amazes me that people defend how the staff handled this.

The grim reality is that somebody was going to get screwed, but that doesn't make it suck any less for Elliot Porter.
Presumably, the guy has been out there busting his arse all summer and now, 4-1/2 weeks before the season opener, he finds out he's not going to be on the team.

however you slice it, its the staff's fault since they signed 27 (over the limit) to start with. no they don't know if everyone will qualify but they created the problem and its their job to manage the schollies properly.
no way you can defend telling a kid who has been on campus practicing for weeks thats he is out of a schollie one day before camp begins. A kid who had multiple other good opportunities and now almost everyone is full.
ONCE AGAIN, POOR MANAGEMENT (SEE C. GARRETT)
