We beat Michigan State in the 1995 Indy Bowl. DiNardo went 10-2 in 1996, beating Clemson in the Peach. Winning record in 1997. 1998 the wheels started to come off the wagon & he was fired in season 1999. Saban’s 1st season was 2000.
But Saban was the coach @ Michigan State.

Josh Reed’s TD catch in the 2000 Peach Bowl happened right in front of me. I have a photo from the Advocate of that catch.

quote:And not just TN, #2 ranked Tenn that was going to be headed to the BCS Championship with Rohan getting injured and Mauck having to play the 2nd half.
It feels like 2001 when Michael Clayton, Marcus Spears & Marquise Hill all signed in the same class & we knew LSU was about to do something special.
In 2001, we beat TN for the SEC Championship.
And then we steamrolled a top 10 Illinois team in the Sugar Bowl.
But, but we lost some games in September and October as derp derp poster mentioned earlier. We have some really mentally challenging posters.

In 2002, LSU fans took over Blacksburg. There was an article in the Roanoke paper the day of the game where the sheriff said it was the biggest riot he’d seen since the Vietnam war protest. LOL after 2007, VA Tech will never play us again.

This is the shite I was talking about. What did you intentionally decide to leave out?
Relax. The op was asking about the Saban era and how he was viewed early on. I lived it. Yeah, we had injuries in ‘02. And we did lost 5 games in 2022. And it was the third straight season we lost an early game. Expectations were lower the and no one wanted him fired, he wasnt on any hot seat, and it felt different than Halllman/Dinardo. But it was definitely a letdown after winning the SEC in ‘01. We were preseason #14 in 2003 and no one was talking BCS going into that season.

Was there and all of that is dead on. The fanbase at the time was starving for success, travelled well, and was loud.

Saban was not a homerun hire by any means. Someone that had potential but at the time had never even won a bowl game if I remember correctly. Fanbase was kind of Meh.

Saban's first Division Title: LSU clinches SEC West at home against Auburn Dec. 2001. Good times and first time LSU stormed field under Saban.
Look close and you can see me sitting in the 5th row and then later porking my paid escort on the 35 yd line. (No, I didn't marry her.....just let her live in the room above the garage)

Compared to that time, how does this feel?
I’ve been a fan for over 60 years, between NIL and this mess, I’ve just about lost interest in LSU football, and if anyone who knows me heard me say that they’d almost faint

Saban was an unknown from Yankee land coaching a middling big 10 program with a middling record. Most were disappointed with the hiring. He was a little upitty when he got here. Acted like we were lucky to have him. He became a good coach at LSU. He was the right age to mature and make a 20 year run. Then he pulled a Lane.

My issue is you only specifically named the bad games and glossed over the good times - not everyone viewed the early Saban years as some disaster.
2000 -- You of course mentioned UAB, but failed to mention the Tenn game the next week, nor did you mention the Peach Bowl playing GT in ATL as an underdog and winning. Nor did you mention we won 8 games his first season when we won 3 the previous season (1 with Hal Hunter) and 4 games in 1998.
2001 - You mention some early losses and UF blowout, but you fail to mention we won 10 games for the first time in half a decade, and 2nd time in 15 years. Failed to mention beating #2 UT in the SECCG and beating #7 Illinois in the Sugar Bowl.
2002 - You mention VT and the losses at the end of the season, but failed to mention we won 6 straight after VT loss and beat UF in the Swamp for the first time in forever, Mauck getting injured late in the game derailed the season.
Should I go on? You gave ZERO perspective how the entire seasons and just cherry picked who we lost to and when we struggled. Let me guess your response to the 2002 UF win... hmmm, I wonder.

Saban wasn’t “Saban” yet. Just a guy with potential who beat #1 Ohio State while with the Spartans. Lots of uncertainty and not near the excitement at the time.

Of course it wasnt a disaster and I never insinuated that it was. He was relatively young coach who was successful and showed immediate improvement from day 1 I only mentioned the bad games to make the point that the Saban we hired in 2000 was not the day 1 savior he has been made out to be much less GOAT coach he would eventually grow into.

No one really knew who saban was but i was an instant fan after his opening presser q & a.

I think there were people at first who thought LSU had hired Lou Saban, one time Buffalo Bills head coach.
Head coaching changes back then 25-26 years ago weren’t the same as now.

Initially when I heard Saban becoming head coach, I was confusing him with old Pro/College Coach Lou Saban or some connection. But I remember people I talked with all felt good about the hire, nothing negative was out there.
But all I know is that with Kiffin, this is the first time I felt we were getting a great coach that most everyone wanted. He is still young enough, motivated and possesses an amazing offensive mind looking to reach the mountaintop of college football. The few that have reservations about him are more concerned about his loyalty, but to me, that is foolish. If he leaves, then he probably returns to the NFL after a great success at LSU. We have everything to be happy about, enjoy what is coming!

Saban Defeated Michigan, Ohio State, and Penn State his last season at Mich St. His team was ranked 7th. I was excited about his hire. The LK hire has a lot more drama.
Also didn't have all the social media back then.

Saban wasn’t Saban when he arrived at LSU. Kiffin much more established and much more fanfare.
