Plenty times this season he has great position on defense as the opposing team is going up for a layup/dunk, and he has the tendency to bail at the last second. It happened on their late transition dunk, and again on the play he got elbowed in the head by Mwani.
He was playing with 4 fouls. That was a smart decision by him.

My favorite player to watch - I’ve always been amazed by the steals he makes and his extraordinary ability to poke the ball out. But that pass last night - where the falling player kicked it out to him and he practically just punched the ball back into the lane in one simultaneous motion - was one of the best passes I’ve ever seen. And some of his blocks I do a double take because you expect it to be one of our big men then realize it was Gaines.

I see a lot of Tack Minor in him. But with a HC who is better suited to handle that type of personality. Gaines NEVER lacks for confidence...even when sometimes he probably should. While it can be very frustrating at times to watch him make bonehead, unnecessarily bad plays, that extreme confidence is absolutely necessary to be able to make clutch plays at the end of games. Clutch players come in different shapes and sizes. But the one trait they all share is that when it is "winning time" they feel they are the best player on the court.
For the first time all season he had zero turnovers. In 32 minutes. For a team that turns the ball over like it is their job that is HUGE. He wasn't terribly effective from the field. He did not have a ton of assists. But he played his most under control game of the season, which allowed him to use his physical gifts to impact the game in other ways. 6 rebounds (second on the team); 4 steals; one enormous block.
Gaines has the ability to be the most electric player on the floor any given night. The question has always been can he start to find some consistency in his play. Last night was a BIG step in that direction. Hopefully it continues

Said it before, Ja Morant in the making and All American in his Sr year.
I can’t wait for Pinson to return so LSU can have their chris Jackson/Ja Morant back court

In terms of 100% effort for every minute in the court, I’m most impressed with Murray. Dude is fierce.

If Gaines keeps making strides on offense he will be an insanely good player.
I’m a big fan. If you’re just a box score follower (hey there are a lot of games) you won’t get it. Once you watch the games it’s super clear.
He isn’t ready to be the main ball handler, but at least he hits FT

He gets a lot of grief on here but he’s playing a role that’s not supposed to be his until next year. He will be massive for us down the stretch when Pinson is back

And if Seneca Knight was still here you would have a dangerous trio with Michael Jordan, right lester?

I
He was great last night from the line but he’s been putrid offensively in conference play
34% FG
33% 3pt
64% FT
.469 True Shooting %
Oh, and he has 18:29 ast:TO rate
The flashes are way too far in between. But hey, he’s ours

He was even worse last year so you know progress.
I would Bet his numbers are atrocious when he’s starting back coming in as a back up. Even with a good game bs Kentucky.
He’s bad when he forces it and has really had to force it
