The MLB draft process is far worse than every other sport. It has to be changed.

NIL is a good start, but punishing players for returning as college seniors is not ok.

I blame the owners

The owners are running a business. The MLBPA is responsible for negotiating the best interests of the players before they agree to a CBA

No you’re not. Minor league teams are subsidized by the MLB because they’re not profitable without it

MLBPA has only represented minor leaguers since last September. Going to take a while for them to pay them much attention.

Doesn't mean that any other business owner that underpays and exploits their employees aren't scum bags either. Unions are garbage and this is why

The MLB has no reason to keep the NCAA’s best interest in mind. It’s not their job to protect college seniors.

I really hope he was his own agent. If not he’ll have basically nothing after taxes and an agent fee

People can't comprehend that these players aren't going straight to the MLB, like they are in the NFL or NBA drafts.

I do. I would expect $50-$80k? At least enough to live on. The players could probably sue under the minimum wage laws it's so low

There should be a minimum that you have to invest into someone that ypu draft, and it should be more than the max an undrafted player can get.

Lol. I don’t think you do. 20K was his signing bonus. He will get a salary as well.

That’s why juniors rarely return for the Sr. season.
Wait.. is this the sign bonus or how much the contract is worth? I’m sorry, guys. I don’t understand this part of it.

Pick a different profession. Minor league baseball is not profitable. You sound like a WNBA fan

How is he being “exploited” and “underpaid”? The vast majority of the kids drafted will never sniff the show. He was given a $20K signing bonus plus whatever the salary is. Low minor leagues, (rookie ball, single A) I wouldn’t think generate much revenue. the stadiums are small and tickets are cheap no TV revenue or luxury suites. One article I saw avg attendance to single was less than 2000 so Dugas and the others will have to adjust to the smaller crowds. If/when a player gets called up to the majors he gets prorated amount of the MLB minimum which $700,000

No. But, like any other business entity, they have a moral obligation to pay their employees their fair value. In fact, that’s what the collective bargaining agreement does for the major league players. If you’re a draftee who has never played any pro ball yet for your future employer, shouldn’t your value be based on where you were selected in the draft?

Here's an article. This is not the WNBA

How much money do minor league baseball players earn?

quote:

In 2018, the laughably paradoxical Save America’s Pastime Act was passed, exempting baseball players from the federal minimum wage and overtime pay. MLB owners lobbied Congress hard for this for years. Well, “lobby” is the polite American word for it, and elsewhere it is known as “bribery and corruption.” The resulting situation is that salaries in the minor leagues range from around $4800 to $14000 per year. Per year.

quote:

The average player salary for a minor league player in 2018 was: A: $6,000 AA: $9,350 AAA: $15,000
