His velocity will need to improve over the next month or I don't see him getting many opportunities in SEC play.

I forget where I read it but that’s where the coaches expect his velo to sit around in a couple of weeks. Just getting his arm back in shape by the day.
Here is what I read Mainieri said:
quote:
Mainieri's decision to roll with Labas got easier after the freshman impressed in a simulated game Tuesday.
His velocity has not yet returned to its usual 90-92 mph state before surgery, but Labas showed good feel for his three pitches.
“He’s not going to go out there and burn up the radar gun Sunday, put he’ll be able to mix his pitches and get through it, I think,” Mainieri said. “Each time he goes out there, hopefully he’ll get better.”

I didn't interpret those remarks to mean Mainieri anticipates a return to 92 mph velocity. I hope I'm wrong.

That could have been what I read and I misinterpreted. Dunno

Did you see the post where I compared Brent Rooker, Chad Spanberger, and Jake Slaughter's freshman year stats?
It's pretty encouraging. And I can definitely see Slaughter on their track and hitting 20+ HRs next year.

Also, though early and a flawed stat, Slaughter has a higher fielding percentage right now that Smith did at third last season.

What are you basing your prediction on? He hit 89 one time according to the pitch velocity display on the scoreboard and all the rest of his fastballs were either 85, 86 or 87.
He was hitting 89-91 pretty consistently a year ago.

quote:I did. That's some good company. But lots of freshmen have those types of numbers. Slaughter will see a bump. By all accounts inside and out, he really handled the slump well from a mental perspective. Still lots of solid ABs and good contact. I get why, but they've flattened his swing a little (something PM loves to do anyway). 20 HRs would be a lot to ask from a PM-coached team. Deichmann is one of those crazy outliers. I think 12-14, even this year, is still possible and likely close to where he'd be next year with a another bump in average.

Looks like he's an Eric Walker type pitcher. Throws 3 pitches for strikes, isn't going to strikeout a ton of people but induces a lot of weak outs. Because he doesn't overpower batters I'm sure they'll be days he gets hit hard and struggle but I think he will have more good outings than bad.

I thought the same thing watching him yesterday. He reminded me a lot of Walker, not lighting the radar gun up but having really good command and utilizing his changeup really well. He'll probably have a little more velo on his fastball as he gets healthy but if he's gonna stay around 90 I think the way Walker pitched last year is a great blueprint for him to follow. Mix in three pitches, stay low and on the corners and fill up the strike zone. I think he'll be a solid Sunday guy for us this year once he has enough stamina to go longer innings.

He throws harder then Walker at 100% huh?

Jordan will be in LF and Watson will return to CF putting Duplantis back in RF
It will come down to Webre and Cabrerra for DH slot
If Cabrera is in the lineup why would he be at DH with Beau in LF?

I think he's hit 91 at times (pre-injury), so yes a little harder than Walker. I think Walker sits around 86-88 and Labas will go 89-91 when fully healthy. If he can have the command and stamina that Walker did last year, we could be in business.

Looks good! Great command with all pitches. If he gets up to 92-93 with that kind of control...

He threw a lot of strikes and his fastball moves a lot. He said around 88 I believe, but they said his velo is down due to the injury. I know it was just one start, but if he can get his conditioning up to be able to throw 7+ innings, he could be our best starter this year imo.

Did you not even watch Eric Walker last year?

From the perfect game showcase in summer of 2016
Steady 89-91 mph fastball, gets a bit of late life to get off barrels and has good downhill angle

He has a good enough change up and command that he can stay at 88 and still do well against anyone

Then apparently you never watched Eric Walker last year.
