re: It does not matter about individual sports "losing" money

Exactly. Put money into a program that can generate a substantial profit and it benefits the entire athletic department.
Putting money into WBB will generate wins, but no matter how much you put in that program, it will never generate a profit. Quite frankly, it seems to only widen the deficit, the financial rate of return is awful.

The money is spent where the fans want it to be (at least in theory). As I've stated above other programs have been built up from nothing and MBB could do it too but if people are expecting all other sports that don't make a profit to be gutted just to save MBB then I think they will be disappointed.
This is a straw man argument. You can invest money into basketball without “gutting” other programs or relying on donors. In 2019 we didn’t gut other programs and won the SEC in basketball.

i’m someone who does not care about basketball at all.
i would prefer all of that money go to baseball instead.
but im also someone that runs an entire division of a company.
and one thing that is universally true in business is “the division that turns the biggest profit, gets the most money pumped back in to it”.
so football gets by far the biggest chunk.
then men’s basketball.
that’s who brings the money into the department, so that’s who gets it back.
it’s really that simple.
whether men’s basketball “earned” it or not really isn’t relevant.
the Basketball TV contract, and the money from March Madness (that LSU gets without even participating) is massive.
so basketball gets the funding.
period.

Does television revenue count in determining how much income is generated by each sport?
It must because based upon the number of paying customers I see in the stands, men’s basketball should be far behind baseball and women’s basketball.
And I have been a huge LSU basketball fan since the Pete Maravich era and was a student during Dale Brown’s heyday.

Hardwood curling at its finest. Terrible sport

It is a direct response to the people who were posting in some of the many threads, some of which were anchored, that were wanting exactly that. I'm saying exactly what you said.

The AD is run "business like" not as a true for-profit business.
Instead of traditional owners and shareholders there are fans, alumni and a BOS to make happy. It has a mission to fund sports that can never realistically break even or turn a profit but are supported and loved. The investment will vary at each school and there is a diminishing return on even MBB since it is overweighted by the TV contract that actual performance has no effect on. Yes it can increase revenue but how much profit is left over depends greatly on how much you spend to make the team better. That is why donors helping cover the expenses they can like buyouts, coach's salaries, NIL and facilities etc. for any sport help the AD and other sports indirectly and help to rebuild MBB is so vital. All sports are limited in how much they can make, for instance MBB while profitable will never make as much as football.

quote:At LSU that is likely true. Meanwhile Alabama made almost $10 million in profit from men’s basketball last season, a 300% increase from 4 season’s ago.

We have some of the dumbest fans.
Just wait until there’s no revenue and profit. Who needs it?

People are forgetting this. The Athletic Department isn’t like a private corporation designed to make the most profit for their shareholders simply to increase their wealth. They have to manage all sports.

On paper the losses for WBB are massive; but that's because they don't get credited with revenue from the All Other Sports ESPN/SEC deal, and they also don't get much dedicated revenue from TAF.

People also lose sight of what athletics is at its core. It's entertainment.
Watching LSU WBB compete for championships every year is entertaining. A sold out gym meet in the PMAC is entertaining. LSU baseball competing for national seeds every year is entertaining.
The priority for LSU Athletics should be putting the best product on the court/field.

Loss leaders are only good for retail and philanthropy with the goal of tax breaks.
This ain't it.
