I hope they plan on putting some big arse oak trees in this new space. Would definitely help with the campus continuity.

My understanding is that the existing oaks around Nicholson Apts Unit One will be left alone and built around.

I hope so. I'll be one of the first to scream bloody murder if they plan on bulldozing down century-old oaks for faux-luxury apartments.

That seems to be the plan, at least according to the initial drawings.

I lived in married student housing (was not married) in 1990. It was the ultimate roach motel. I mean they ran the place. But lawd it was dirt cheap. Me and 2 other guys crammed into a 2BR/1bath place and my share was $60/mo.

Will not miss seeing them.*

* except that I no longer get to tell my kids I lived in those sh*tty apts during school and dealt with it, my life was hard, struggle was real, etc.

I understand your sentiment but outside of a few stores, the area is so damn shitty. Shitty sidewalks, graffiti, vacant buildings, lopsided utility poles, etc. If done correctly, the area has vast potential.

I mean come on, we can't get better than this?

Maybe. Probably. But I don't think that flattening the one single area near campus that has some semblance of character and putting in "mixed-use" bullshite is by any means the right way to go about it.

Also, I'm not aware of one single vacant building on W. Chimes. Also, the old Gattis is now occupied too. So it's really not 1/2 as shitty as you're leading on. It's just not a sterile strip of chains.

George, I didn't read all the details, but will there be an elevated walkway for pedestrians crossing Nicholson?

Why would you think a pedestrian walk way or a tunnel is necessary?

People can just run across this state four lane highway and dodge the tanker trucks like they do at the Box and like they did previously when they had the old Box there.

All for the improvements but it appears that there will be, once again, major road work going on right in the middle of football season/traffic. Without reading all the specifics, what is the estimated time frame, start to finish?

Just as long as they leave Inga's alone.

Great sandwiches.

Any idea if there will some kind of permanent marker that graces the former location of home plate at the old Box? Too much history there to cover with concrete and not at least mark the location. I know there is no way to give it homage like old Rosenblatt in Omaha, but there should be something to recognize the old site.

Where's the streetcar?

There's an article in today's Reveille about the Metro Council approving a 10M dollar bond for a tram system that will connect the University with downtown.

Re: a small marker to commemorate the old Box: I would think that possible.

Tulane has an unobtrusive but nice marker/memorial commemorating Tulane Stadium. It sits at the corner of the quad/soccer field right in front of Reilly Center.

I do think they should add another marker at the spot where Tom Dempsey kicked his 63 yarder. It would be somewhere in the middle of the field, if I'm figuring correctly.

This is privately funded so who owns the property? Will LSU own it or will the private developers own it? Will the residence halls be part of LSU or be privately owned?

I would assume a private/public partnership similar to what you have with Barnes & Noble and the new bookstore.
